Internet go down for a while, Brian?
September 22, 2019 at 6:42 AM #813640CoronitaParticipantsure Brian, if you say so… I don’t see how you could possibly pick up second language if you spend most of your time on Piggington… But if you say so. You definitely wouldn’t be able to handle Chinese… So try Spanish.
let me guess … Last year… You were trying to impress a Chinese woman. This year you are trying to impress a Latino woman????
I am surprised someone, as worldly and refined as you claim yourself to be, would not already have a foreign language under your grasp. Afterall, if I recall, it was a requirement in high school for 3 years of a foreign language as a condition for being considered for admission into almost all top rank schools, including Ivy League schools that apparently you think so highly of as part of the criteria to being refined and worldly… That’s the only reason why even I, as “narrow minded and parochial” as you think I am, took 3 years of Spanish in addition to my native fluency in Mandarin.
Didn’t you apply to one of them “refined” universities when you were in high school, considering you think it’s so critical for being so refined and scholarly? Didn’t you end up going to one of them “refined universities” where you learned all your “refinements and worldliness?”
Clearly, someone as refined , worldlt, and knowledgeable as yourself Brian would have already taken 3 years of a foreign language , no?

He appeals to religious/Catholic/conservative types (especially older people), even though he’s a complete hypocrite and any semblance of religiosity is a show. There’s also a long tradition of colorism (racism with finer gradations) in Latin American countries, and he pushes that button for some people.
Remember, abortion bad, but separating nursing infants from their mothers, good.
As far as Asians, some people in China embrace American goods — Buicks sell like hotcakes in China and are considered a luxury status symbol. Same with Nike shoes.
September 22, 2019 at 1:05 PM #813643FlyerInHiGuestFlu, I took Spanish in HS and college but that doesn’t mean I speak Spanish. It’s a great foundation to build on. I want to communicate fluidly in Spanish and I want to invest in Mexico. It’s just next door. Didn’t you say that your company opened an office in Mexico?
One day the drug violence will be under control
I also studied Chinese. Pinyin is very easy but the characters are way hard to learn. I actually think that as computing become more advanced, Chinese will be an advantage. Chinese characters have meanings on their own so they in a sense communicate at a higher level. Unlike alphabet languages, you don’t need to sound out the words for there to be meaning.
September 22, 2019 at 1:07 PM #813644FlyerInHiGuestVery good points, spdrun. I have observed the colorism also. Many latinas and middle eastern women for that matter love to color their hair blond to look more white.
I know a Latina who looks black to me. She is married to a white guy. She thinks of herself as latina/white before black. To me, the Chinese love American produdts for different reasons. They trust the quality. And they love prestige.
But there is no absorbing of identity. Asians don’t much like western food. they would much rather have their own.
And Asians strive hard. If they embrace American culture, it’s to augment their own and make a new whole that is better than the sum of the parts.Hispanics are easy going. They love fiestas and they just want to.work hard to earn money to send to their relatives. They will indeed take work that Americans don’t want to do. They really love us but we give them Trump in return. Sad!
Yes, every individual is different. But this is a general discussing.
Americans can be so fragile and PC. People love fake outrage like “how dare you? You don’t know me!” even when the topic is not anyone in particular.September 22, 2019 at 4:21 PM #813645gzzParticipantI did study abroad when I was 17-18 in Mexico. Great experience, I became fluent by taking 4 hours of classes a day + living with a host family.
I got lucky to be placed with a family doing it because they liked having American boys, not for the money. Papa was a developer, mama a retired dentist, big beautiful house he built himself. They spoke very little English but enjoyed Ray Charles records. He sings slowly and pretty clearly, so that helps. Some of the other kids in my program weren’t as happy with their placements.
September 22, 2019 at 9:57 PM #813646CoronitaParticipantjust when I thought Piggington posts couldn’t get anymore stupid, I am proven wrong over and over again by the same suspects.
If I ever become old, single, and alone with no friends, I’d rather have someone just shoot me than have to resort to camping out here.
September 23, 2019 at 12:37 AM #813647FlyerInHiGuestI’m forcing myself to read lots of Spanish. And I now watch the news in Spanish.
Spanish is very useful in California. I don’t know that I will become fluent but I will be happy if I can communicate fairly well. -
