ParticipantSpeaking as an East Coaster, I’ve honestly experienced more situations where I felt threatened on the road than on public transport.
Example: I was 19. I had an old Fiat convertible handed down from my sister who had bought it for $400, then couldn’t figure out how to keep it running. Driving back to college, I merged onto a freeway a bit too close to an old Honda Civic full of angry asshats. They changed lanes, came beside me, and one of them started waving a large knife out the rear passenger window, shouting, signifying, and swearing.
They passed me, but changed lanes in front of me whenever I changed lanes. Finally, I signaled left just before an exit, started changing lanes to the left, and cranked the wheel over to make the exit at the very last moment. They tried to do the same, but didn’t quite make it — they probably needed the services of an upholstery cleaner to get the brown stains out!

Participantis it ever OK for a regular citizen to say to say, NO, not in my name, no thank you, do not serve me, i do not want your service, in this way.
Not only OK, but sometimes the only moral choice. Even soldiers are required not to obey illegal orders.

ParticipantI don’t think many people get stoned once per day. (!)

ParticipantIn the 50’s – when religion was still largely a part of the American family and before the libs took over – the problems we have today weren’t even on the radar screen.
Au contraire. Read about youth gangs in NYC in the 1950s. How about Charles Starkwether? Leopold and Loeb?
Every generation has said that the previous ones have been heaven. All too often, they have been wrong.

ParticipantTherein lies the difference between patriotism and jingoism.

ParticipantSo what? There’s never been an instance of road rage where someone ends up shot or stabbed, or a fight in a public place like a bar or stadium? Right. Shit happens. It’s not as if this happens every day. I’m not going to sit at home cooped up because there’s an 0.001% chance that some psycho might stab me because I looked in the wrong direction.
And he’s not dead. Hope he makes a full recovery and that the jerk who stabbed him ends up being shivved in prison.
However, I’d glad that no video footage exists. Seems to be no video surveillance on the trolley cars, which is a win for privacy even if some crims get away.

ParticipantWhen I bought my condo, there were literally over a hundred nails sticking out of the walls ranging from tiny finishing nails to full-sized construction nails. It took about a day and a half to remove each one and patch all of the holes (!)
Yeah, some people nail to excess.

ParticipantWorld production capacity has ratcheted up considerably over the last 5-7 years. Is Iraq really relevant anymore?

The kind of foreign investment that many world cities are attracting right now is EXACTLY NOT the kind of investment that NYC should attract. Corporate HQ? Good. Immigrants starting small businesses? Brilliant. Immigrants buying property to live in or rent out? Awesome.
Rich Saudis or Chinese buying property that sits vacant and is not used? That’s unproductive investment, pure and simple. Doesn’t add anything to the city, but pushes up prices and creates blight.
That’s the kind of investment that should be kept out of NYC. So far, the combination of strict co-op boards, a perception that NYC is less posh, and pesky US laws have succeeded in keeping this in check. I’m fine with that.

ParticipantNY Times app stores content offline so it’s available whether or not you have a signal. Thermostat can wait 30 minutes, no?
I disagree that we’re enriched by rampant commerce/commercialism everywhere. Nor are we enriched by electronic entertainment everywhere — if anything, zomboids engrossed in their e-Toys reduce serendipity, which is itself one of the factors that enriches city life.

ParticipantFree people don’t need their electronic leashes to work 24/7 (so their boss can email when they’re taking the train to meet with a friend at 11 pm Friday) and track them everywhere. Slaves do. This freedman really doesn’t care one way or another about living in some marketeer’s wet dream of an “advanced” society.
I prefer the idea of a comfortable, honest, and just society to an advanced one. I can’t think of a single time when being able to yap-yap-yapp or connect to the intarwebz on the subway would have enriched my life materially.
The great thing about e-books is that they’re downloaded for off-line use.

ParticipantYou can get tiny brushes at a hardware store (d/k about HD) or art supply store. Premixed patching compound is for sure available there. Use an x-Acto knife with the blade reversed to push a little blob of compound into the hole.
Color match — if you know what paint you used initially, you should be able to get a batch that’s very close in color mixed up. And next time you repaint, store a gallon or so of paint in bottled water bottles. The caps seal well so the paint’s ability to dry is minimized compared to a can. Should last quite a few years for touch-up purposes.
