ParticipantSo far, the risk of being killed by a Muslim immigrant committing an act of terror has been smaller than slipping in the tub.

ParticipantNitpick … JFK was not a “Brahmin” — the term Boston Brahmin specifically excluded Irish Catholics. And again, his family’s success in the past didn’t matter. He annoyed a lot of people by not being part of their tribe, or the usual tribe that participated in US national politics, anyway.
I think that 3/4 of the hatred of Obama comes from raw tribalism. If he smashed ISIS, ended all wars in the Middle East without killing a single soul, made for the employment of every American that wanted a job, he’d still be hated.
Me? He makes me happy. I’m not a WASP. The more diversity there is in American politics, the more chance my children (or grandchildren), if I choose to have them, will have for success in this arena.

ParticipantHe brings out emotions because a large portion of bigots are angry at the fact that a first-generation American with a darker skin tone than them got elected as their executive. And is doing a decent job considering the mess he inherited.
His demeanor doesn’t matter — no matter what, he’ll annoy certain small minded folks. Same as Kennedy pissed people off because he was an Irish Catlick, not a good ‘ol Protestant Anglo-Saxon boy.

ParticipantWhy not announce the due date a month in advance and have people work on what they want in their spare time? Hackathons are meh.

ParticipantAssume an HOA fee of $200/mo. Most Americans don’t HAVE $2400 to pay in a lump-sum, their life is financed.

ParticipantProblem with NV is that its one selling point was legal gaming. And now every state is legalizing it.

ParticipantNJ has many gorgeous parts outside of what you see from Rte. 1/the Turnpike. West Point isn’t really upstate — it’s 50 miles north of NYC. Roughly the same distance as Camp Pendleton to the SD airport.
Hyde Park/CIA is getting there, though it’s still only about 25% of the way from the city to the Canadian border.

ParticipantI’d argue that virtually everywhere can be “redneck” outside of the big cities — ever been to parts of upstate New York, western Mass., or southern NJ?
Rumor has is that parts of upstate NY even have active Klan 🙁 See below, have to give the guy points for creative Sci Fi storytelling…
‘ALBANY, N.Y. —A Ku Klux Klan member conspired to use a remote-controlled X-ray device hidden in a truck, which he called “Hiroshima on a light switch,” as a weapon of mass destruction to harm Muslims and President Barack Obama, a prosecutor told jurors on Monday.’

ParticipantGood thing is that Canadian purchasing power just got cut by 25-30% owing to the low price of oil and collapse of their dollar. Hopefully this, plus higher rates, will have a corrective effect in markets where Canadians like to buy.

ParticipantFossil fuel reduction in the US is an engineering problem — build out more renewable power and nuclear, make the grid more robust. Electric cars for shorter trips by land, frequent and relatively fast (not TGV speed) electric trains for 200-750 mile trips by land. Highly automated car rental available at endpoints.
Encouragement of energy conservation. It won’t kill anyone to use LEDs, have lights on motion sensors, or dry clothing on a rope vs a dryer. Nor to heat to 68 in winter, cool to 75 in summer.
Who pays for it? We will, via taxes on fossil fuels used as fuels vs for chemical processes.

ParticipantAren’t you being the “protectionist” by saying that it’s not safe to own property near a mosque? If anything, we SHOULD be creating mixed communities. If a community is mixed, there’s less of a chance of the mosque-goers being isolated. Isolated people are more easily radicalized. So as a practical matter, all people should buy property in all communities, in order to keep the “melting pot” going.

I’d recommend some acidophilus supplement and testing for food allergies then….
we should all be ambivalent to some muslims becoming radicalized, plotting, and executing a deadly terrorist attack a few days ago. it’s not like they worshipped at an islamic center or anything. oh wait.
A few Muslims out of millions in the US? What about Christians who go berzerk and shoot up clinics and dynamite Federal buildings? Should you be afraid to buy next to a church?
