ParticipantFunny. The stereotypical pairings are:
Black guy/White woman
White guy/Asian woman
Latino/AnyoneBut I guess Asian guys have to date/marry someone as well 🙂
IDK – I like the idea of cars up on jacks. I’d want to be able to work on mine without being harassed/fined by some HOA putz who needs a two-fisted ‘tude adjustment…
As far as house paint, make my neighbors’ houses road-cone orange, please!

ParticipantCalifornia would be better off electrifying existing lines and rebuilding them to average 100-120 mph where possible.

ParticipantOr you can bump into terrorists.
Not worried. Even in 2001, there was more of a risk dying of being hit by a car than of a terrorist attack in the US.

ParticipantDoes Tesla still do things like this…?
http://gas2.org/2014/09/27/tesla-wont-activate-mans-salvaged-model-s/
http://cafeelectric.com/stretchla/If I got an email like this, it would provoke murderous rage in me:
“Due to the salvage status of your Model S , I have been instructed to cease providing you with parts. Tesla is very concerned about vehicles with salvaged titles being improperly repaired. Going forward, all salvaged vehicles must be inspected by us or our approved body shop, Precision Auto Body. If declared a candidate for proper repair, reconstruction must be completed by a Tesla-Certified Body Shop.”

ParticipantMaybe I’m wrong, but the “new” development in North Park looks more late 60s to late 70s to me, with some later exceptions. At the time, razing historical homes seemed to be the thing to do. Section 8? Are you sure you’re not talking about the part of the 92104 a bit … east … of North Park?

ParticipantI’m going to disagree about multifamily vs single-family. There are plenty of good and bad areas of both multifamily and single-family form.
A few years ago, I got lost in an area of Phoenix. All small single-families. I went to ask for directions and had someone kick the window of my rental car for my trouble. Apparently, the area was known for meth and other interesting drugs, but didn’t look “ghetto” at all.

Participant(1) Can the spyware that constantly phones location home to the filth at Tesla be disabled? Not everyone gives a flying rat’s ass about improving their future self-driving abilities or theft protection (vs privacy).
(2) Is it DIY friendly, or will Tesla continue to restrict supply of parts?
(3) Roadster 2.0, please, already.
(4) I’m not sure if US fuel prices are a big factor in commuting to/from outlying exurban pestholes anyway. Assuming a car that gets 30 mpg, we’re talking about a $8/day difference over a 60 mile (each way) commute over a $2.00/gal difference in fuel price. I feel like this is nearly insignificant for the kind of people who supercommute (generally not min-wage workers).I feel like travel time, home prices, property configurations, and the availability of services/activities (schools, nightlife, beaches, mountains etc, depending on what floats ya boat) are the deciding factors.
But the interesting question is: if, hypothetically, self-driving electric cars make sprawl more desirable, will they have a FLATTENING effect on home prices throughout a region? Home prices in the exurbs might be supported, but if people no longer are restricted to living in a downtown or near a downtown, will downtowns become less desirable. As in, Robert Moses’ wet dream finally coming (hah!) true.

ParticipantThere’s nothing particular naturally about national borders. But they are real. You probably don’t have a natural right to be anywhere on the globe absent plane travel, a heavily regulated industry subject to various national rules.
Everyone has the natural right. They’re just prevented from exercising that natural right by filth from various governments, including ours.
I will not lift a pinky to help enforce national borders. I won’t vote for scum like Donnie that threaten to enforce them more zealously. I won’t snitch on someone whom I know is in the US illegally. I won’t answer anything other than the legally required questions at internal checkpoints or show an iota of gratitude. Etc.

ParticipantI’m confused — by “open to the sky”, do you mean you want to have a glass roof? Do those things work on non-vertical windows?

ParticipantI can’t speak for FlyerInHI, but as far as inviting immigrants to join me, I guess you’re saying the country is a metaphor for a house —
(1) My concept of personal space doesn’t extend that far
(2) My government doesn’t often speak for me. I’m intelligent enough to realize that the fact that THEY don’t invite someone to my country doesn’t automagically make them a “bad” person. Just a person who (by accident of birth) wasn’t born in the US, and didn’t go through a lot of bullshit bureaucracy to come here. They have no more or less natural right to be anywhere in the world than you or I. I don’t feel nationalism or American exceptionalism strongly.spdrun
ParticipantRemember the OP started the conversation by lying to them. Told them it was a vacation home, then turned it into a rental.
As if it’s any of their business.
Technically, he said it was a “second” home. Many people rent out their second homes when not using them.
It’s a lot better/safer to have a tenant in place than to have the home vacant 11 months out of 12, ready for burglars and squatters.
Nah, bugger the snitching neighbors and their church.

ParticipantDoctors/dentists are usually on the ground floor (though less now than before, some have been reconverted to apartments) and have their own entrance, so no buzzer required 🙂 But yeah, it’s a common setup in NYC.
But I’ve also seen it in the suburbs. My dentist is out in NJ, and she has an office on the 1st floor of her detached house.

Participant^^^ Doubt it, unless you’re talking about a puppy mill, they’re selling a handful of puppies per year. Many people probably sell more things on Craigslist.
Does San Diego allow doctor’s and dentist’s offices in residential areas (typically on the ground floor of their house) as many US cities do?
spdrun
ParticipantSit motionless on the porch holding a fork, while licking your lips, staring at the puppies, and muttering how hungry you are…
