ParticipantSpeaking of ass cleaning, veganism does make poop softer and messier. I have a new cheaper solution.
Moisten washcloth.
Apply toilet paper to damp washcloth to dampen tp.
Use as normal.
Works much better.
Look, if you treated an animal at home the way a factory farm does, you would be prosecuted and go to prison. It’s pretty clear theres a cognitive disconnect. Our whole society is mad, obviously.
Hell, tying a dog to a tree at home is a crime! Google dog tether law for details. But the factory farms do far far worse.
Maybe a fair compromise is to raise and kill all meat reasonably humanely and build it in the price. A burger might cost 25.00 at in and out. But so be it.
I dont want any fucking statins!!! I dont want or take any meds.
I actually would like to do the right thing for the world and myself, whatever that is, regardless of others perception, but esp. Your perception.
The least harmful way. No more animal human market sicknesses that destroy humanity.no more vague post cholesterol test anxiety.
So just file it away: if someday you get tired of high cholesterol, just eat plants for 3 months. Skip tofu if you fear sissiness. I’m mainly beans n nuts anyway.
Now, the 10 day vipassana meditation retreat [worldwide group, but they’re in 29 palms in socal… its free! 10 days room and board, donations accepted only after you finish and leave…no recommended amount…its..not capitalist] might be what irked you. Sitting on a room, silent, for 10 days from 430 am to 9 pm, does sound more oddly threatening to the normal social order than simply giving up meat.
I started barely able to sit for 5 minutes without feeling crazed. I’m up to 1 hour.
Take the 3 minute meditation challenge!
Set your timer for 3 minutes.
Sit still and straight.
Attend to your breathing. Maybe count your breaths, to 10, then start again.
Observe your thoughts as they come. Do not hold on to them. Let each one go.
(You are not your thoughts)
.good luck!! It gets pretty nutty in there when you really closely inspect.
I think it’s a general truth that everyone thinks they’re pretty much in control of their thoughts…until they attempt to meditate…
As Sparrow in his awesome, humble Guide to Meditation available free at Sun magazine says it’s like two separate discos at 2 a.m.
At first I felt like my thoughts were bitchslapping me. Or maybe dragging me away like drunk friends to another bar.
Or wrestling me.
Or carrying me away like a horse.
Or tying me up.
Or breaking into my house and throwing the glassware on the floor.
Now, sometimes, not always, I can see a thought approach me, from a distance. It comes up to my home, Taps on the window. I may not even grant permission to enter!!! The thought slinks away, sadly unengaged.
But a lot of times I get tied up or bitchslapped by my thoughts.

Participant“There’s something happening here
But what it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to bewareI think it’s time we stop
Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look – what’s going down? There’s battle lines being drawn
Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong
Young people speaking’ their minds
Getting so much resistance from behindIt’s time we stop
Hey, what’s that sound?
Everybody look – what’s going down? What a field day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly saying, “hooray for our side”It’s time we stop
Hey, what’s that sound?
Everybody look – what’s going down?Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you’re always afraid
Step out of line, the men come and take you awayWe better stop
Hey, what’s that sound?
Everybody look – what’s going down?”scaredyclassic
ParticipantWell, electric cars on balance wont save the planet cause the electricity and the cars and the battery are dirty to produce.
But animal farming is somewhere between 17 and 50% of global emissions, depending on what effect goes into the math. I’ll get you some citations
If the planet stopped animal farming, tomorrow, and we could, the impact would be huge. We cant all realistically not drive cars starting tomorrow, but we can all make a choice right now what we put in our mouths.
If the planet is on fire and global warming is an emergency and there’s hope, then ignoring the problem is not just a mere Lifestyle choice…its evil.
It is, for future potential generations, unforgiveable.
If on the other hand, the planet will be fine, and Greta and the scientists and those you believe are merely poseur virtue signalists, and nutball climate concerned vegans are simply alarmists, exaggerators probably cooking the numbers for some nefarious political purpose, then yeah, they are annoying assholes trying to reduce the net pleasure of the planet by snatching that burger out of your hands.
Which one is it?
If things get bad, do not console yourself with the thought, well there was nothing I could’ve done anyway, or who really knew.
You knew, or should have known. You could have acted.
But change is hard. Meat is social, its bred in the bone so to speak.
Its culture. Its comfort. Its habit.
But you knew.
At the very least you knew they were burning down the amazon to make your bacon.
Hell, you read this thread.
We are all, each, individually, absolutely responsible for our share of the problem.
That’s why I decided to become vegan last week.
I feel better, because I am doing something.
Is that silly?
Ive had yogurt every day for the last 30 years or so. It is very hard just not to eat cheese for me [although I will finish the stinky cheese no one else will eat so as not to waste it]. I ate some cheese most every day this decade. Eggs. Dammit. There were some gourmet donuts I was offered yesterday. No thanks.
No lecture on animal products. But no donut. Who am I too say anything, next year I’ll be in a ginormous mansion with just my wife. Ridiculous. Shameful.
It was a fancy 3.00 donut.
I love fancy donuts.
This is not about ones health.
This is about the planet.
This is much bigger than the real estate bubble. It will be the biggest issue of our time.
Electric cars wont save us.
Less cars, little meat, little flying, fewer kids, might not save us…but it’s the only steps you personally can take that could have an actual [though admittedly negligible] impact.
We are all part of the problem. Hell, I had 3 kids, do the less kids thing is not doable for me.
I’ve been stuffing my stupid face with meat and eggs and cheese my whole life. True, I dont fly much, but that was only because I despise leaving home. I suck too.
Pretty goddamn annoying little tirade, eh?I’m even giving myself a headache. I demand my longest, most irritating post of 2019 trophy, now.
Scaredy, you might say, just say fuck it, do whatever, nothing matters, have a beer and a burger and shut up, both your actual voice, your written voice and while you’re at it, the voice in your head.
That gives me more of a headache.
I honestly believe we are in trouble.
Do you honestly believe we are not?
Anyway, if you read this far, thank you. And do what you really believe is right. Whatever your heart tells you. But with your heart and your eyes and your mind open and aware.
Namaste.

ParticipantThat’s basically .5% interest extra to go to schwab because it must remain there 1 year. Not that great.

ParticipantSetting aside moral judgments is a Vietnam vet who comes back with PTSD and hooked on heroin tougher than a protestor who got shot by cops and went to prison protesting imperialistic wars?
Americas intuitive range of toughness invariably veers toward bellicosity.
“Dont be a tough guy, dont be a fool!”

1.
the state of being strong enough to withstand adverse conditions or rough handling.
“the toughness of steel”
2.
the ability to deal with hardship or to cope in difficult situations.

Participant
Normally I write lengthy responses when I disagree but I don’t know where to begin after reading these posts, so disappointed.
Hopefully America feels the same, and cannot vote for a buffoon who believes he is tougher than mattis.
If trump, a fat whiner, thinks hes tougher than mad dog mattis, by implication a man like trump is tougher than all u.s. troops. Since I believe most civilians alive are tougher than trump, I read trump as saying then that most any civilian I’d tougher than any u.s. troop.

ParticipantI just got back from restorative yoga, a peaceful slow class which ends with a wish for peace to all living beings. And I kind of feel it.
Still, honestly, I hope for only bad for trump and all his family. If I could wish him dead, I would, and be joyful. I need a few more classes.

Trump would be laughing.
Advantage, trump.

ParticipantIn a previously unreported 1998 interview with Howard Stern, Donald Trump compared sex to going to battle in Vietnam and joked he should be getting the Congressional Medal of Honor.
”
Comparing sex to Vietnam:
“Hey, so wait a second, get back to my question,” Stern said. “Let’s say you’re with a hot chick, right? But you’re so germ paranoid, and I’m germ paranoid, do you say to them, ‘look you’ve got to go take a medical test before I do you.'”
“Well, you’d like to say that, and sometimes you do,” added Trump. “The problem is that sometimes your own chemicals take over and you can’t wait.”
“So you’ll just have straight intercourse with a rubber with them right?” Stern asked.
“Well, I don’t know, you know there’s lots of different ways of doing it. It’s a very complicated subject. They say that more people were killed by women in this act than killed in Vietnam, OK,” Trump said.
“Yes, that is true,” replied Stern.
“You know, you get criticized for that statement, but that statement is very easily true,” added Trump.
Stern responded, “I even went as far to say that you’re braver than any Vietnam vet because you’re out there screwing a lot of women.”
“Getting the Congressional Medal of Honor, in actuality,” said Trump.

ParticipantBut seriously, why are u.s. soldiers always perceived as tough. A guerrilla fighter in the jungle with no support and no hope is tough.
A cog in the worlds largest military machine just isn’t tough in the same way.
