Participantwe are not allowed to have twinkies at our place. so a few years back i illicitly bought a pack. I was going to split it w my middle kid. we were saving it for some reason in the overhead storage compartment int he minivan. no one ever used it. We wereall in the car and for some reason another kid reached for the compartment and unlatched it;randomly; no reason. the twinkies fell out of the compartment.
it was utterly hilarious…

Participantwas looking at a tiny 400 square foot house witha nice porch area in Pomona. listed at 89,000. maybe he could get a roommate…probably be better to see if he actually got in…and see if he made it through the first year..

Participantstrange. I can remember the heat tray like it was ten minutes ago. but there are whole years in between that are blurry

Participanttoo bad he figured out how to get a 4.0 plus GPA in his sr yr when it no longer counts. maybe he could write about that. Started doing his homework.
re: more prestigious schools. not sure why. Cost more. More competitive.
i think if you want your kid to be in the area later it’s better to send him to an area school. I left home and went to another state, then I never really came back. I understand he might have to move away some time, but I say play the odds. cooper union too far. probably meet some crazy NY hasidic girl and have 12 kids. i’m going to need a ride to the doctor so it’d be better if he were withn say 100 miles and had less than 6 kids..
he’s an unusually calm, clearheaded person. But he’s been that way since he was born. Even in the heat tray, five minutes after he was born, he was wide eyed, totally self-possessed and confident even though naked and helpless, seemed very observant to me, very conscious that I was staring at him. I was impressed. I knew I was probably a mess when I was 8 lbs and lying in the heat tray. Much more disorganized, definitely anxious. I probably had that agitated look on my face i have nowadays when I can’t find my damned keys.
“Where did you see your keys last?”
“I had them in the goddamn placenta, and then I went through the birth canal. I don’t know. Last i saw they were in the placenta.”
“Did you check the womb?”
“Of course I checked the fucking womb! Dammit, I can’t believe I lost my keys somewhere between the womb and the stupid heat tray!”
This kid was fresh out and not perturbed in the least; totally ready.
The other two were not that way in the tray. Just different. More intensity, more desire…more movement. The oldest was just perfectly still, but you could tell, perfectly healthy — “poised” is the only word I can think of. If you can keep your composure right after you’re born, you’re a pretty cool cat.
I was immediately inspired to be a better person by his attitude in the heat tray. The oldest gets a different hand dealt. It’s scary to send him out to such a competitive world. But he will be fine. However I cannot seem to sleep.
Ah, here are my keys! right here in my little infant cap! phew. now i can relax and get to work suckling…

Participanti don’t know if it’s a good idea to reach too far. As he told me when we were discussing the pros and cons of me applying for higher positions, he said, “Pa, the tallest blade of grass always gets cut first.”
