Participant
Based on what I read in the news, it appears that at least some of the charges were justified, especially against those who illegally arrested Freddie Gray and also against those who failed to restrain him.
In terms of the mercy on our souls – to my knowledge, nothing that I have ever done has indicated that I would approve or condone such a thing. Who’s souls require mercy – other than those who took part? The simple fact that bad people live in this world is a terrible thing, but I think we should be rational about who should be held responsible. The current spate of violence and vandalism shows that people either can’t figure out who is responsible, or choose to take their anger out indiscriminately. Should God have mercy on those who burn down a legitimate business and ruin a family’s source of income?
For a start – lets require that police wear cameras that deliver a feed wirelessly. My understanding is that the cameras have to be turned in and the data downloaded at the end of the day. This allows officers who would like to cover their tracks the ability to accidentally lose or destroy cameras with incriminating information. And why aren’t there cameras in these vans? That would have provided a lot more info. I also think that video cameras encourage a lot more lawful behavior. As an aside, I think they should also be put in classrooms – the stuff I hear that (theoretically) is coming from the teachers can be unbelievable at times.
I think police have always done this stuff – it’s a blessing that we now have some video footage to prove what everyone’s been saying – there are a lot of thugs on the police force.
I’m too furious with g-D to acknowledge that he or souls exist, so don’t worry you’re in the clear for now.

ParticipantI am actually slowing down with age. I am not as peppy as I was at 42. Based on that, I can see how it might be possible that some day I do actually die.
If our consciousness ultimately becomes download able will insurance companies be able to avoid payment? I better check how death is defined

…I’ve known many Christians and atheists, and both groups have their good, bad, and neutral. I’ve seen no difference in the level of obnoxiousness where the extreme ones are concerned.
perhaps. but the obnoxious superior atheist is a relatively new phenomenon. the obnoxious and dangerous religious viewpoint is pretty old.
im wondering how tht came about. when i was a kid, i dont recall religious people being so in your face, so proseyletizing, so demanding of public presence. kind of lik e veterans, they were proud and in the background.
as religiions got pushier and more needy, maybe atheists repsonded with “back the hell off?’ Im talking about the last 40 years in the usa only….
It has seemed that way to me too, scaredy.
I’ve attributed it to one of two reasons (have no idea if either is right):
– I’m getting older and less willing to have religious zealots inject themselves into my life so it feels to me like they’ve become more intense
– The internet has let groups of people with minority viewpoints to interact and use the power of forming a group get their viewpoint better heard. In this case, the atheists.
It is my opinion, btw, that the internet allows for more anonymous interaction (like right now, for example) so topics can be thoroughly discussed and analyzed in a freer fashion. In my opinion, this will accelerate the decline of religion. That statement, of course, is for people who don’t believe an all-knowing, omnipotent object and immaculate conception are really possible. :-)
yes. the internet has greatly affected the mormons. there has been so much mormon chat on who Joseph Smith really was, and the gritty details of mormon history, that the Church itself has changed its stance on Jospeh Smiths early life on its website. this kind of truth spreading could be damaging for some, who believed the old version the church served up, which wasnt technicaly true, and has caused some to flee the church. but it is probably in the long run just one of those accomodations religions have to make to changing times.
go mormons!

Participant
Ah yes… my convoluted ramblings 🙂
GF+prev-house–> Divorce, she gave up rights to the house. Full and clear from that as of Feb/2015… another reason we started house hunting 🙂
FHA+luck+NW-Chula–> I agree NW Chula is very nice… I mean you get spill over from Broadway and some areas have a high concentration of apartments… but don’t need a/c! 🙂
I also agree that we are a long shot… and to be honest, idk if I could really actually pull the trigger. Soooo much student loan debt, plus credit cards and all.
I feel I am a microcosm of the current issues facing first time home buyers…
Renting–>Normal Heights yes… lovely place, and super cheap. Still have to drive down to Chula to drop kid off and then head to Poway for work.
Thanks for the response and insight. Condos… yeah, they scare me. Like an APT I can’t bounce from if I don’t like. East Chula… meh, all HOA crap. I’m a bit of a hick so if I’s buy’s land ain’t nobody gun tell me what ta do… ‘cept maybe law dawg
She says she just wants a house… so, maybe we look elsewhere in South Bay. Lemon Grove? Nasty City… omg La Presa is fugly, like TJ hills… S Bay Terrace is like condo land… #1 gentrifying area 92113… encanto, are there pockets of nice?

Participant
I don’t have life insurance because I have nobody to give the money to.
But if you buy life insurance early, say in your 20s, is it cheaper and is the term longer?
Also, if you don’t go hot air ballooning now, but go later and die of the balloon falling to the ground, does the insurance pay up?
the question was whetehr i plan to hot air balloon. so if i own a hot air balloon and dont disclose, or had a reservation, or that was something that could be show n to be my thing, i think theyd contest it. but now i think i can go. but i o not want to go.
you buy a term; 10, 20, 30 years. it’s cheaper when you’re young because your odds of living are better. once you hit 60 and up, the hyperbolic curve of rates ascends. that means with every passing year, your luck is running out.
unless you buy whole life; but thats more complex…we spent a few days on that in tax law class. i cannt remember much…theres an investment component and a term insurance component. and something…but theres a definite payout. i dont know…

How old was he? And what was the cause of death.
Someone living a normal American life shouldn’t suffer life-shortening stress.
Participantbest price i could find 52 to 72 level term life is 2100/year. for 1 million
i think im worth more than a million but that seems like a good number. the 2100 is slightly painful but i think it could help me relax. maybe i’ll change my directive to DNR. at one million, its fine if i die.
interestingly one of the questions was whetehr i go hot air ballooning. my wife wanted to do that. i told her no way, that thing is a death trap. she mocked me. now i have proof.

ParticipantDuty to God becoming larger part of Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting
scouting mag reports you have to pretend to believe in at least one (1) manmade concept of an allknowing being to be a scout and to get “scout spirit” badge. not sure if any G-d, no matter how ridiculous , will suffice. Not sure fi you can worship norse G-ds. In fact, duty to G-d seems a bit exclusionary of pantheists. I like Zeus, but the other G-ds are just as vital to the balance of the universe.
I have a feeling the scouting pack would throw you out for some manufactured reason if you tried that kind of crap
really would like to see if you can get a badge for believing in Santa. Havent read the regs and if they define “G-d” or religion. perhaps it can be a home craft project type religion, liek local spirits.
this kinda stuff doesn’t really make me mad, but its definitely a sign that you better pay lip service to the reigning champ if you want to get along. does put truly principled atheist parents in a tight spot, sort of, or on the bright side a teachable moment in keeping your mouth shut and going along with the program, no matter how obviously wrong , dumb, oppressive or absurd it is.
what a crappy position to take though for the scouts. .
