Participantit was too hot.
started an hour late even though dl wakes up at 3 am.
all in all, i couldnt really make any sense of his message.
the chinese student protestors i could hear sound like they havent been properly indoctrinated by the liberal arts faculty. maybe we are not reallyopening up foreigner minds to opposing viewpoints .
sure does seem like a prime example of the benefits of being armed to the teeth. if tibet could get a do over with lots of us arms sales in the late 40s…knowing what they know now….id urge them to load up on bombs and land mine the perimeter. kill every last invader…give every man woman and child a gun and fight to the death.

The Dalai Lama is fascinated by science and has said that if he had not become a monk, he would have become an engineer.

i thik that one might be true
I think you’re promoting fake news there scaredy. The article is pretty clear, the kid did not get accepted to Stanford “just for writing BLM on [an] essay”. His ‘writing BLM” may have had nothing to do with his acceptance, and it wasn’t an essay.
A more appropriate claim would be that Fox News may have taken a tiny piece of the story and turned into a central part, in order to enrage their viewers. Which is exactly what Fox News has been doing for decades, leading to postings on RE blogs claiming “Right-Wing Media are Destroying Our Country”.
wait. it was his college app essay.
its kind of a lame essay.
i looked at the foxnews article. seems similar to nbc. doesnt claim this is why he was admitted just describes essay and his surprise it worked.
doesnt claim he was otherwise unqualified. just that this was his essay
maybe essays dont matter. or maybe it was good and i just missed it.
conceptual art?
i just find the essay not persuasive or moving. but, reasonable minds can differ. also not sure it is technically an essay.
stanford app calls for an essay. pretty specific about what they want.
http://admission.stanford.edu/application/freshman/essays.html
essays are loosely defined historically but im not persuaded this qualifies as an essay.
i suppose even a blank sheet could be an essay… a statement on minimalism in a consumerist society.
still, i like to see some more style in writing.
maybe the whole event in not newsworthy. just designed to stir up racial animus?
i think id disagree with that. i think its an interesting story. foxnews readers might be more inclined to infer he wasnt qualified but theres no info on that. clearly the kids smart. he knew his audience and persuaded them.
perhsps interestingly, the kids a rich bangladeshi muslim and grew up in the rather upperclass enclave of princeton nj. attends princeton day school [tuition is 33,430/yr for hs there!]. his website…

very very smart kid.
kind of funny, somehow. ormaybe sad.
i listened to macolm gladwells higher ed podcasts on college admissions unsuvcessful attempts to recruit smart underprivileged kids… dudes brilliant, engaging and makes unexpected connections and intellectual leaps. much deeper than ziad the activist. altho not fair, ziads just a kid

Participant
For those seeking meaning in their lives the Dalai Lama will be speaking at UCSD Friday June 16 9 a.m. at RIMAC Field, tickets are required. I’ve never seen him in person so I will be going with an open mind.
i have tix. my little one is a big fan. hes also concerned and was the 1st to inform me that this might be the last dalai lama due to China.
the story why Chinas interference is loathsome can be researched on the internet (heres a start from the ny times https://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/12/06/magazine/the-last-dalai-lama.html )…
it is likely there will be no more true dalai lamas, due to his exile, the mystical rules concerning new dalai lamas, and chinese repression of tibet.
in the future d.l.s will be appointed by china, just fake chinese copies appointed by china not accepted by tibetans.
but things change. the strong beat down the weak. life goes on, indeed, that is life. even the dalai lama thinks the institution ofhaving a dalai lama may no longer be useful.

ParticipantOn Children
Kahlil GibranYour children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.scaredyclassic
Participantwe went to the separate engineering dept ceremony, and the speakers were dry. i was not asked to speak, but i appreciate the vote of confidence.
he may be the most engaged, interested, and excited person i have ever met. its strange but he seems to me now exactly the same as when he was 2. born intensely interested in studying the details of the world.
im proud but acknowledge he is not my doing. he was a great human and all i did was i didnt screw him up . not sure that merits, great pride. i did provide consistency and infrastructure, which i guess im proud of.
i guess i just feel content.

Participant
Finding meaning in your life is very important IMO.
Else you could be a very rich miserable SOB.
Family, hobbies ect.. can be meaningful but in general the idea is life is not for being happy, but for finding meaning and that may not be saving the world etc.. or even doing what others could not do in your place.
Anyway IMO.
My life is feeling unusually meaningful right now. The oldest just finished SDSU engineering, in 4 years as planned (anybody know of any employment leads for a young mechanical engineer?).
He is so clearheaded, optimistic, joyful, he makes me feel really good about life, even though, basically, my life is kind of winding down, in a sense. Not imminently, but I do feel like the flight has begun its descent. I think im still permitted to walk around the cabin, for a while at least.
But not him. He’s just booking an incredible trip, ready to go!
So lately it seems to me that meaning is found in helping other people, your kids, or others you can connect with. Now I would not have agreed with this sappy sentiment when I was younger, in fact, it would have sounded kind of stupid to me.
Others? Feh. Why would I want to “help” others if I could spend money or time on my self. Well, it turns out I was wrong. My self is kind of dull and annoying.
I went to buy him a new car last night and frankly, it was way more fun than buying anything for myself. In fact, there’s pretty much nothing else for me to buy for me that will make me really happy. I have everything. A new expensive car for me would probably just depress me, thinking about insurance, etc. I’d much rather have an old cheap car for me and a new cheap car for him!
So yeah, it sounds dumb. But meaning is probably found when you connect and look outside yourself.
