July 7, 2015 at 10:35 AM in reply to: OT: How to combat a repetitive scam phone call from “Windows Technical Support” #787763plmParticipant
Had the same problem a couple of years ago. Wife almost fell for it. Good thing she called me before she gave the credit card number. Anyhow they just will not stop calling. I’m guessing it was because they got close. Good thing was their caller id number even though it wasn’t a real phone number was the same each time. Our cordless phone has a way to block phone numbers and that fixed the problem once I blocked it. Perhaps yours does as well? Drove me crazy until I figured out how to block it.

Are you hiding something up there?Anyway, I’ll PM you later the name of a guy who does AC on the side while he’s going to medical school. He has years of experience in the business. Maybe he can take care you.
No skeletons up there. Just some personal issues with people being allowed into the house. I appreciate your help.
plmParticipant
Now is the time to find the leak. There are probably different methods. If the system has enough gas in it then they can use the soap test, leak will probably be on the high side. If the leak is on the low side then you can actually suck air into the system when it gets low and then the coil can freeze up or the expansion valve can be blocked with ice. So fix the leak, then put the whole system under vacuum (no loss of vacuum confirms leak is fixed) to make sure there is no water vapor in the lines. Will probably have to change out the filter as well. Get it done right the first time!
Yes, need to fix the leak long term but can’t if no one can get into the attic now so I was hoping to have AC until then. Now, recharging isn’t an option either. Liked my old house better with the furnace in the garage. Don’t know why they place them in the attic instead.
plmParticipantGuy isn’t coming after all since he just called and they need access to the attic as well where the furnace is which isn’t possible right now. The person I spoke to yesterday said they only needed access to the thermostat but the technician told me he needed access to the coils which is at the furnace.
So no AC for me.

They are sending someone over tomorrow morning.
plmParticipantI was with the guy when he was doing the testing. It was visual so I assumed he used a dye but I didn’t see a UV light. He basically checked around outside at the AC compressor and also up in the attic where the furnace is. It’s a new home and there is quite the distance between the two so I was worried maybe the leak is in the line between the two.
After about an hour of investigating he just recharged the refrigerant. I know it wasn’t freon but the new stuff was expensive. I think he added a lb of it and that part alone was around $100. Hopefully the new stuff is good for the environment.
Don’t mind maybe searching for a leak later but now isn’t a good time for repair people to enter the house so I was looking for someone to come over and recharge it.
plmParticipantI’ve had OOMA for almost 5 years now. It’s been really reliable and the best part, free!
plmParticipantThey don’t force you to use their lender but if you want their incentives, you have to use their lender. So you use their lender then refinance afterwards.
plmParticipantI was thinking that the lender would take into account the rental income but I guess that wouldn’t work since it would start a month later. Perhaps you would have to pay off the house first which would be rather difficult.
plmParticipantI think its too much of a hassle to sell and rent first. Best to save enough for a down payment to not have to sell first. If you can afford higher payments for a move up home, you should be saving quite a bit each month already.
plmParticipantJust had a slice of pie in Julian. It is really good but I think people go for the fun drive and scenery. Town itself is kind of a tourist trap but its fun.
May 15, 2015 at 9:57 AM in reply to: NEw construction: builder upgrades and selling price question #786281plmParticipantYes, on both of my new house purchases, they allow you to pay for upgrades separately. And usually they make you pay half up front in case you don’t go through with the purchase. I have found that the builder charges quite a bit more for upgrades but your kind of stuck using them unless you want to replace it yourself later.
plmParticipant
I tried to get a quote from Farmers Insurance & was told: starting in 2013, Farmers does not issue new policies in Scripps due to high risks (fire).
Does anyone know which insurers will issue policies in Scripps ?
Thanks.
Chubb does (what I am using).
plmParticipantWhen we got married, wife didn’t have any credit so I just added her to my accounts but now she can get separate cards. The only bonus I ever got was a beach towel for my first credit card while I was in college.
