Are the apple pies really good?May 17, 2015 at 9:31 PM #786364plm
ParticipantJust had a slice of pie in Julian. It is really good but I think people go for the fun drive and scenery. Town itself is kind of a tourist trap but its fun.

ParticipantBarron’s grocery store sells Julian apples in season. They are small and a tad sour, but very good. I buy them every year. They hit the sweet spot, less sour than granny smith but more than all the other varieties.
Why are you trying to build your own home? When I’ve browsed deep-east county listings, it seems that supply is very high compared to the rest of San Diego, and you should be able to find exactly what you are looking for without the hassle of building yourself. And if the location is really good and OK for development, someone would have already built something on the lot.

ParticipantI was in Julian once,
I thought it would be a nice retirement town but it seemed a bit hard to get into and out of (no major hwy into or out of).
It seemed a very long drive.May 19, 2015 at 10:08 PM #786461Multiplepropertyowner
ParticipantNot really true about good locations not being available. What seems to be important is water meters, access to road, electric, etc and how much of this has been done in advance. We want to buy something for 10 years from now, plus want to build it ourselves. We have a place in Encinitas and want to have a place in the mountains as well. BTW, the apple pie comments were super helpful.
