ParticipantMexico Resident, are you really a Mexico resident and looking at buying in SD? What areas do you like best? Just wondering what your perspective might be.
Yes, I also noticed Spectrum showing stress. The new William Lyon development is starting around $430k. I went there last weekend for the grand opening (on my way somewhere else) and it was deserted. Hardly any traffic. I dislike the stacked condo concept in a wood building (concrete and steel downtown is OK). A friend of mind lives in LA in such a wood building and there was a leak from his condo to the dowstairs one. Not pleasant. His dog chewed the toilet supply line. Think of the moisture in walls and mold.

ParticipantIn my view, $739k is not motivated enough. At 42 DOM, I’m willing to bet that it sits on the market — unless of course, you jump in and buy.
Don’t waste your time looking. The buying opportunity is not at least 2 years away.

ParticipantI think that threads should evolve like an ongoing conversation. If a thread is no longer relevant it’ll die-off and people will start new ones. We don’t need moderators.

ParticipantI also support compulsory military service for everyone — no exceptions.
I have a good friend who’s a military officer. People in the military tend to be Republican (or think that they are) because they like to speak in short to-the-point remarks or in a friendly banter. When I’m given the opportunity to speak one-on-one with my friend where I can have an intellectual conversation with him; and probe him on why he feels a certain way, then he’s more open minded.
The military is all about following orders and not questioning authority. Progressive thinking takes some pause and some reflection.

ParticipantI’d like to see more details on the White Emerald Drive listing also.

Participantjg, I really like the WRX, btw. You don’t read _Road and Track_ and _Car and Driver_, do you? They are French magazines!
On the subject of the American auto industry, the other day, in Santee, I saw a Nissan Titan 5.6 as a work truck (with the racks and tool box). Can you imagine a Franco-Japanese truck as the work truck of the good ol’ American man? What has this country come to?
About Ford, a friend of mine managed a fleet of Taurus cars for his company. They constantly had transmission and maintenance problems. Remember Wingcast, the Ford and Qualcomm failed Internet venture? That’s how Ford spent its money rather than invest on car design.
Put any American car (even a Jaguar owned by Ford) next to a Toyota and compare the fit and finish, the body stamping and the gaps in between panels.
It’ll take some hard years and many layoffs before the American auto industry can reform itself.

ParticipantIt baffles me that people living in million dollar houses should have financial problems. I know a couple whose marriage is on the rocks because of a recent million dollar purchase in Poway.
We’ll see all kinds of real-estate related crazy behavior in the coming years. And yeah, no own was holding a gun to their heads forcing them buy.
I love anecdotes because they illustrate the trends.

ParticipantEnlisted military are not dumb. They simply lack the opportunies and financial wherewithal to go to college. Many use the military as a stepping stone to bigger and better things.
I admire the military for being the most egalitarian institution in our country.
But the military it a bloated institution that needs reform and not more money. I actually support Rumsfeld (except for the Iraq debacle) for wanting to right-size the military and make it into a more nibble force. Rumsfeld had the force of character, the personality, the personal rapport with Bush and Cheney, and the smarts to make it happen. Unfortunately, Iraq has set us back 30 years.
If anyone could have reformed the military it was a Republican like Rumsfeld. The bloated military industrial complex should thank Iraq for saving it.

ParticipantI would agree that Penasquitos is preferable to Poway. Poway does have high-highs and low-lows. I’ve visited my friends there and it does get hot in the summer. True, you can get bigger lots in Poway. But what is the use of a large lot that you have to irrigate at great cost lest it’s all dried weeds?
I don’t understand living east for a large lot. You spend all your money on air-conditioning and water. That money is better spent on a better house closer to the coast, in my view.

ParticipantI’m also on jg’s side although I don’t agree with him philosophically.
John Kerry was criticizing the president not the military.
In the same vain, isn’t it true that personnel who enlist generally don’t have college degrees? Many join for the GI bill. I happen to know of 2 kids who enlisted last year without graduating high school. The military was so desperate that they lowered their standards and enlisted those men without a high school diploma, then helped them get their GEDs.
The reality is that the military is comprised of lower class men and women who join because of the training and benefits offered. Without the military, those people may never have the opportunity to develop their skills. For that, the military should be praise for being an equal opportunity program. It’s sort of like welfare, training and job for the poor. Let’s get real and see it for what it is.
Milton Friedman said that we might as well outsource the military and we might even get better value for our money. How’s that for conservative market approach thought?

ParticipantActually, housing moving at or below inflation makes perfect economic sense to me. Remember that the structures depreciate and have to be maintained and eventually rebuilt. Only the land should appreciate.

ParticipantI’m only an observer of San Diego real estate. Bugs’ postings reflect my recollection of the SD market since the late 1980s.

ParticipantHere’s my response to another related recent thread:
http://www.piggington.com/ground_truth#comment-16995I would much rather buy at Escala than up in La Costa. I like their 3-story detached houses. I just like the urban setting a lot more. Mission Valley is centrally located and is a better location for a young couple. If you buy small furniture, won’t feel that much space.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20060924/news_1hs24smsofa.htmlDon’t move to the boring suburbs until you need a “safe” environment for school age kids (at least 7 years away? ).
I expect to see bargains at Escala when ALL the development buyers are under-water. $350k for a detached house?
