ParticipantIt’s interesting that you think it is a good idea to use a home equity loan to buy a car but not OK to pay for a kitchen remodel.
My memory may be wrong because I never thought of taking money out of home equity for anything but to “improve” the home –
but am I mistaken that there was a time that Heloc money HAD to be spent on the home? And it was only when consumer debt interest became non-tax-deductable that it suddenly became the thing to use Heloc money for non-home related purchases?

ParticipantWow.
My husband and I just did our annual retirement financial inspection while preparing our fed taxes.
Both of us have deposited the max since our first jobs and that has been around 30 years. Plus there is some company rollover money.
It totals right under $300,000 – sure glad we have a few more years to save because I’d hate to retire on that!
My point is that I feel sorry for anyone who didn’t start saving early because it sure builds up slow. Our deposits to IRA / Roth have always been considered priority and I can assure you we have never driven anything like a BMW or thought we could buy a house in Irvine.

ParticipantYou bet the house is devalued – because you will always know what happened and wonder if there are any long term results (like hidden mold).
For my own peace of mind I would be on that worksite all the time and watching how it is being fixed.
Just because the builder is playing nicey-nicey doesn’t mean he will any more than just fix what the eye can see.So I would get alternate accomodations as near as possible and make myself a constant observer – that is the only way you can “value” the property again and be assured, when you go to sell it, that it was not devalued.
