I can also assure you that there most certainly are Caltech graduates who work for the government.
Perhaps, but they’re not fixing potholes.

ParticipantThanks for posting scaredy.
Very thought provoking, but it reminds me of the likes of those claiming (logically) that an economic collapse is around the corner. It hasn’t happened yet, and it most likely will not happen.
I believe we go on doing we what we are doing for at least another 200 years without any significant consequence. Both from an environmental and economic standpoint.
Humans are warriors – on net humans love to kill, destroy, eat, have sex, crap and pee. And not much more thanks to the progressive movement.
The good news is that according to NASA there are tens of billions of earth like planets in our galaxy alone – fortunately we just don’t matter as much as we think we do.
We have become invincible though for the time being thanks to technology.

ParticipantRe: Licensing. The thing you’re not considering car is that many high flying financial careers as an example require an Ivy League or elite education in addition to,the, license. Sorry, that’s some rarified air….it’s MUCH easier to become a garden variety govt worker (cop, etc….) than it would be to graduate from Harvard or other elite school and then go to work for apple or GS.
Way harder IMO. And yes, I was kidding about the cal tech sticker.

Participant
I know it doesn’t fit into your (extremely uninformed) conceptions about public service, but most public agencies only higher people with above-average IQs (but not so high that it might indicate the potential for “unusual” behavioral or thought patterns).
You know CAR I think you’re absolutely right; just the other day there was a city of san diego pothole crew in front of my building; and while it was partly obscured by old tar out of the corner of my eye I noticed the following bumper sticker on the back of their dump truck: Cal Tech Alumni!

FWIW, I once had to get a federal security clearance about 20+ years ago, and this was much easier to do than to apply for/get screened by the LAPD.
Maybe it was easier 20+ years ago, and you no doubt had a low level clearance.

Participant
Because government agencies are seen as deep pockets by those who want to sue them. This is precisely why the standards for public employment are so high (as high as they can go relative to the hiring agencies’ resources). One of their top priorities is hiring people who are not a liability to the public agency.

Most police departments are looking for an obedient cross between psycho and sociopaths with a light criminal background IMO.
Meanwhile, the Cream of the Crop work for companies like these:
Apple
Microsoft
Google
Goldman Sachs
Various BioMed Companies
Research Hospitals/UnivSeriously CAr, it’s true. The cream of the crop in general are NOT govt workers.

Just wanted to poke at you a bit with a quote from your very own link:
“The scariest part of Fukushima is not what has already happened; it’s what could still happen. Every day is a desperate effort to keep the plant from melting down. What’s distressing for many is the Japanese government is not overseeing the cleanup.
The government has requested that Tokyo Electric and Power or TEPCO, be in charge of the cleanup. It is a private, for profit, company.“
Honestly, I think the Fukushima issue is global – and there needs to be a GLOBAL private/public effort to mitigate the impacts.

Ashley… “…grinding more than what I wanted…” The validity of your argument ended there. It isn’t appropriate behavior at a school and you know it. Values used to mean something in the U.S., but this feel-good generation of socialists allows this garbage in moderation. That’s why BG and I have been talking about the hiring and training involved with public service. They do background checks (including interviewing neighbors, former employers, friends, etc. in many cases), psychological tests (personality and IQ, in many cases), credit checks, etc. During training and probation, they pay attention to the personality traits of the recruits/trainees to further weed them out. What your seeing is the “cream of the crop.”But I do have to add that Texas (not sure about NM) has moved more and more toward trying to save money on law enforcement…lowering pay and eliminating pensions and other benefits. They are seeing a lot more problems as a result, as one would expect.
I’ve heard there are actually private sector screenings that are even more rigorous.
I think you might be right about Texas lowering pay etc…and getting lower quality cops. I mean the police in California are outstanding.
BTW, does anyone have an update on the Fullerton cops that murdered Kelly Thomas (and charged with murder)?
Oh, and what happened to the cop(s) who shot and killed a man (shot in the back) last year in Anaheim?
Did anyone besides me think that there was probably valid issues raised in Chris Dorner’s manifesto?
It was really sad that LA area cops shot up innocent people during the search for Dorner.
