ParticipantI would suggest combining everything into 1 401K account then you can borrow up to $50,000 or 50% of 401K, for downpayment on house without penalty. The crux for you may be if you change jobs often, and it appears you may, then you will get hit with the tax and penalty when it changes to a distribution, if you don’t pay it back within 60 days upon leaving job. If you are young and do have savings now would be a good time to convert to a ROTH IRA, because as everyone with a brain knows, taxes are going up in the very near future. The government has to raise taxes or allow inflation(hidden tax), or more likely both. Never mind, just noticed you don’t have 401K with current employer.

ParticipantI’m no expert but I believe if it’s on the supply side it is galvanized iron pipe, and if on the sewer side, cast iron pipe, either way not good news. If one is handy both can be replaced, the latter with pvc and the former with copper and shark bite fittings(home depot), i believe lowes calls them gator bite or something like that. If you want to replace the 4″ cast iron all the way to the main drain at the street then that’s a big job, that’s where I draw the line and call in a pro.

ParticipantWell today we (wife ,son, and I) poured an addition to our cement patio and wrote our names in the corner(highlighted with beads). Don’t think I would have considered doing that in a rental. Material cost $200,experience – priceless.

Participant” Does basic include a $250K brain surgery that will likely extend life for one year?”
This is really the crux of the problem. Why should it cost $250,000 FOR AN OPERATION? I KNOW HEART BYPASS OPERATIONS ARE ALSO EXHORBITANTLY EXPENSIVE, why? I know many people will say it’s because of medical malpractice insurance, are our doctors that incompetent, I don’t think so but maybe I am wrong. Antbody out there care to explain why an operation can cost in the neighborhood of $100,000? I don’t get it!
