Participant

Our county used to have union bus drivers.
A little surly, been there, done that mindset,
but they knew the job and it was a union gig so
they wanted to ride it out for 40 years.
I am generally against union excess, but there is a LOT to be said for loyalty on BOTH sides of the fence.
I write software so if I want a raise I generally have to go find a new job, where I can market my new skill at a premium. My previous employer then hires (and trains) a new developer for the job for about what I got on my new one. Makes more sense they would agree to a decent raise, but not the way it works. OK in this economy if you have a decent job you shut up and are happy…
Exactly. Normal people, if they hate their boss or want a raise, just go find another job.

Participant
Of all the potential Republicans, I like Michael Bloomberg the most.
He’s pragmatic and has experience running New York City.
Bloomberg is progressive liberal who switched parties to get elected Mayor. He has even less of a chance than McCain of being elected President or even winning the primary.

The comments are hilarious. The fact that this solution is tenable and has worked drives the pro big government and pro union people nuts.
Unfortunately, San Diego would go bankrupt before our leaders would have the political will to try something like this (in spite of the lip service that Sanders has given to outsourcing city services).
What is the minimum profit on putting out a fire?
If a fire isn’t profitable, will the company put it out?
If a fire is profitable, is there more profit in making it worse?
if business is slow, is there a profit in setting fires?
Clearly you didn’t read the article; they didn’t outsource public safety. However, you are assuming that ‘not for profit’ government is always looking out for your best interests and has no profit motive. I’d say that they definitely do have a profit motive and the unions are the ‘shareholders’ who benefit from that profit.
And then there is this little gem:
