ParticipantI agree with “Construction At..” (What a weird name)
At home, to my wife, I am constantly complaining baby boomers getting all the hard assets and jacking up the asset price.
They bought their houses at cheaper prices and taking full advantage of the next generation. They consumed more than they actually produced.
Excuse me to say.. but once they passed on, it will ease our social security and health care burdens. It sounds mean, but that’s the brutal truth.

ParticipantNobody say stock is not a risky business. Looking past at 2000-2002, if you hold the big caps (KO, GE, MMM, PG etc), the drop is really not that bad. It return and pass the bottom eventually.
I think of the market this way… if you hold cash, you get killed by inflation (rip off by government by default); if you invest in quality companies with the long term horizon (10 years+), you are looking for growth, price appreciation, not speculation. That’s what I’m trying to do. I, as well as many, am not day trader, stock speculator, I just want to invest in great companies that can grow in value over a long period of time. Cash in USD definitely do not fit the requirement.
If there’s one thing I believe, I believe in the long term trend of the stock/bond market. It can drop BIG, real BIG, but at the end, it returns 10% annually. Unless you chicken out after 25,30% drop (buy high, sell low), if one is persistent, value oriented, I believe stock market is where people should invest. Basically, hunt for quality companies and ONLY buy at reasonable price.

Participant“I understand that, in the same neighborhood, the price per sq ft for a 3600 sq ft house will always be lower than that of a 1900 sq ft house. But in this case, the discrepancy is so large that there has to be something else.”
Yes, intelligence. :-)) (Just kidding, I just can’t stop messin’ with you, 23109VC. Sorry…. )

ParticipantI think the stock market will last for a while. I don’t know how long, nobody does. Money got to go somewhere.
It’s not going into R.E. related business.
It’s not going into housing itself.
It’s not all going into international stock & bond market.
It’s not all going into money market fund or Cert of Deposit. So, where do you think some of the money will end up?
Stock market.
I have placed 70% of my bet on it. We’ll see. ^_^ My worst case scenario is that the total portfolio will drop 40% in real value. Even that, I’ve positioned myself to buy more if this happen.
Just my 0.2 cents,

ParticipantI don’t see a point to sell the house given your situation.
You should keep the place and you have a good long term investment. I don’t want to repeat what everyone said. For you, it’s a no brainer, keep it.

ParticipantFlat or a bit higher.
I wouldn’t put all 10% into gold coins, I will buy some mining companies (e.g NEM, TCK) with dividends instead.
I don’t think Gold coins’ return can beat stock market in the short and long run.
