Participant

BG, I’m not sure what newcomers you’re referring too. The population increase is coming whether you like it or not.
Or have your kids decided not to create any grandkids?
First of all, the OP discussed this (supposed) future population increase for SD County. My kids don’t live in SD County and likely won’t move back here. None of them majored in a technology field, so there is nothing for them here which doesn’t pay much better elsewhere.
Secondly, deaths cancel out (or almost cancel out) births in a “natural” population increase (assuming illegal immigration is finally curbed or stopped altogether). In any case, this group doubles and triples up in order to be able to rent housing in CA for themselves. It is not uncommon for them to live 8-10 people to one housing unit. For them, this is a “typical” household size.
About half of American millenials have already formed households. A good portion of the rest ARE a member of a household consisting of unrelated roommates and have been living in this type of household for years (esp in expensive cities). For the half who have already formed their own households, if they feel they need different housing (ex: due to an addition to their families), they will simply swap out their existing housing unit for another one. That isn’t “new household formation.”
Instead of making up stuff and wild-ass guesses. Here’s a good site for some data.

Some key stats:
migration – outflow slightly more than inflow
births is >2x deaths
industries: 92% is non-scientific/technicalltsddd

ParticipantI am not greedy. I just need the Nasdaq to pull back 1 or 2% the next couple days.
What would you do if walking through a casino floor and seeing that a roulette table has hit 9 black in a row?
I know I’ll stop and put some money on red

Participant
I’m going the opposite direction… Gonna take a chance with Kinder Morgan and Chesapeake Energy, as long. Also bought Micron Tech. and holding AMD until after the earnings. I can digest a $2 drop in AMD stock with my remaining shares, and still come out a little ahead. Looking for a white knight in a probably atrocious earnings call though.
Playball AH today…
I am a bit gun-shy about energy stocks. Got pulled into AT due to the high yield and got burned pretty badly. I think AT yield was close to 5%.

Participant
do you have a limit for losses?
the up moves so far have been too solid to short,
most bad news rolls over in a few days,
fed is on hold, this is not a normal market
Please limit your losses to 5%
have you done an upside/downside analysis?
This is strictly a short-term play and I’ll liquidate before the week ended. I don’t hang on ETFs more than a few days at a time regardless whether I am in the black or not.

ParticipantI am about 60% cash. My stock holdings are mainly in 2 of the big US banks. I think the banks stocks are way undervalued, so I will hang on to these for awhile. That said, I think the market overall is frothy and bound for a correction in the near term. the udow is up by about 30% since the brexit low.

ParticipantSame here. Sold my udow a bit early in the morning, but I can’t complaint for a 4 point gain after a couple days of owning it….I need ubs to make another move like today and I’ll be out of that also.

ParticipantI bought a boat load of efa and ubs. also picked up some udow…..I am more or less done with the buying unless the market drops another 5-10%. Will sit on these for as long as it takes for me to make some profit.

UDOW is bad idea right after a drop. The issue we don’t know how irrational the market is going to be on the way down…..
nah. big drop during the opening is the golden opportunity to buy….later in the day people will realize that the us equity market is the only safe haven left…they’ll all jump back in.

Participant
Is it time to buy back in? Or should I wait for the real exit?
I did sell in May and I am 85% cash. So, yes, I will be moving some of that back into stocks tomorrow.

Participant
Wasn’t everyone terrified of the Japanese buying up half of California in the 80s?
A lot of folks were terrified of the housing market just a few years ago.
