Does anyone else see this minimum wage fight as simply being welfare so the poor masses don’t revolt and start doing bad things to everyone else?
I suppose I look at it as not really a “business” case or logical analysis, but as shown time and time again in history, the “haves” really don’t want to see what will happen when the have-nots get too pissed off with the current situation. I think in France, some kids and young people torched hundreds of cars in a street. This isn’t good for anyone.
I also just read today some young kid (23 maybe) near UC Santa Barbara kill 6 people and injure 13 others because he was lonely and girls didn’t like him…
If the poor people (and there are a LOT of them) decide that things suck too much and things aren’t fair (they never were), it wouldn’t surprise me for some of these pissed off people to take it out on everyone else.
Also note that in America, guns are cheap and it’s probably already happening.
Maybe it’s their fault and all that, but at the end of the day, I think people and society in general would be better served if the top top execs and ultra wealthy .1 – 1% made less so the other 99% don’t go crazy and just start offing people that they think are cheating the system or taking advantage…Maybe like some people have suggested, instead of raising the minimum wage, make it so the poor say aren’t taxed at all or something or given more credits, etc…
Ultimately, like with health care, we’re paying already one way or another…
joecParticipantThe term “shadow inventory” was probably invented by rich bankers back in 2009 when they didn’t want anyone else to buy properties at the bottom…
They loaded up at the bottom and now, are sitting up 35-75%.
There is no shadow inventory in SD and any low priced stuff was dumped already back in 2010.
joecParticipant
Seriously, what’s the % of traffic from U-turns vs your own cars? I’d think that the occasional U-turn was a minor issue in the scheme of things.
If it bothers you, can you put a chain across the driveway?
I doubt the HOA will allow a chain, but I’d guess the additional cars doing u-turns in my driveway to be around 6 more each weekday…(3x morning/3x afternoon)…yes, it’s my fault for being more or less close to a school, woe is me…doesn’t mean I have to like it though.
Another annoying thing is sometimes, some large SUVs practically BLOCK 1/4 – 1/2 your driveway so you can’t get out. I yelled at a “soccer mom” once for blocking half my driveway…not to mention they crash in your trashcans, drive over your yard, bleh…if I had my way, we wouldn’t have bought here, but the wife is queen and like most other men, I relented to just “buy a place to not get nagged continuously anymore”.

Yep. It’s a matter of not blocking the view from the front of someone’s house (like when someone parks a big van or truck in front), and it’s also about being able to park in front of your own house. What if you’re bringing back a large load of groceries or other items? What if you have visitors who are handicapped and can’t walk down the street easily? It’s just a matter of common courtesy to not park in front of other people’s houses whenever it can be avoided, especially if it’s for more than an hour or two.
This is probably the main point…I don’t park in the street or the driveway (we actually use the garage), but if you have say a few large SUVs parked right in front of your house, it’s very hard to see when you are pulling out and in. It also is an eyesore and IMO, makes the place look more ghetto as it looks like the area is a rental area…
Yes, it’s a public street (if I could pay and make it private, I honestly would as well to prevent people I don’t know/like to park there)…also, if I could put spike stripes in front of my house so people will stop using my driveway to make a 3 point turn, I’d go there too, but alas, people seem to not think it’s a big deal (unfortunately, I live near a school)…so… unless it happens to you daily where your driveway is marked up like mad from car tires, no one cares really.
oh well, such is life. don’t expect you, spdrun to understand or care really…just bitching as usual (I am).
joecParticipant
Hi All,
Thanks for the comments. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to get back yesterday. I should mention that I have no intent of doing anything about this, nor am I upset about the situation. I asked because several of my other neighbors on the other hand are starting to object, and I was curious as to what legal if any grounds they would have. I can see how you might jump to the conclusion that I was planning a legal battle here, but that isn’t the case at all.
This is really a case of me just asking if anyone knew anything about the law of this situation. (ie anyone know anything about those mini-dorm restrictions?) We do have CC&R’s in the neighborhood, which do prohibit renting out rooms, but I’m pretty sure they are unenforcable if push comes to shove. (No HOA, just CC&R’s)
So, if anyone has knowledge about how this plays out if some of my other neighbors decide to wage war over this I’m curious as to what you might know. But don’t worry about me. I will stay well clear of the fighting. (There’s been plenty of fighting in our neighborhood about other issues so it’s nothing new)
Thanks again,
XBoxBoy
Seems that if there are already CC&R’s, maybe see what the recourse is and follow those rules.
Most likely, some of the neighbors are being affected and that’s why they are upset. Normally, people can care less unless it affects them. If there are 3 more cars parking right in front of my house, I’d be annoyed too.
I just hate when people park in front of my house for some reason…not sure why…
After 3 days, I think they can also call the cops and state the car is abandoned and get it ticketed/towed…
joecParticipant
King of the Small Engines…
Honda Honda Honda…
Excellent products… Used them for years when turning apartments never failed once in hundreds of hours of operation.
CE
They also hold their value really well and I see used ones selling for 70-80% of the lowest cost new one normally…
joecParticipantI’ve been considering the “portable” 2000W generators myself from Honda and Yamaha for the longest time…if funds ever permit…
I figure they can both be connected together for 4000W and they are movable if you had to evacuate anywhere (like one for you and the missus). They are also quieter (like 53dB) or something so they won’t be as annoying in a crowded “city” environment.
You could also bring them on camping trips for off-grid electronic use, etc (they seem popular for that).
Costco sells one that uses a Yamaha engine that you can also daisy chain, but isn’t as name brand…
Wouldn’t mind other suggestions as well.
Downsides I see is they can be stolen easily since they can be grabbed by hand.
If you wanted to power everything at home, you can google how some people hook up a generator to their home circuit and flip a switch, etc to power the whole house. Once you get one big enough, you might as well get bigger since I don’t think they are that different in price and noise levels. Also, a lot of times they are rated at 50% use so you may need more than you expect. Connecting a fridge alone probably surges to 2000W.
No idea on propane since I don’t see much about them in my old searches.
joecParticipantHas there been any neighborhood fire protection programs around? You figure these fires are here to stay and will happen every 5-7 years.
Most people would be happy and willing to at least defend their area / homes given the right tools/equipment/training.
Sorta like neighborhood watch or the reserves, etc…you would go through fire training and be “called up” in situations like this.
There is obviously liability, but you’d signed that off and hopefully, not be on any of the difficult spots. Maybe like putting out hot spots “after” the fires so the “real” firefighters can spend their time fighting the toughest areas.
joecParticipantUnleashed neighbor guard dog bites 4 year old (you can see the boy in the video with a bandaged leg later so it was serious enough for just a 1 sec attack)…thankfully, they had an unleashed pet of their own.
joecParticipantWould be cool if there were club group install projects for solar. Everyone interested would get together to buy in bulk and help each other install the parts like when they do it for cars…
joecParticipantI’m actually looking to buy TWTR…I hate all the social companies as well, but since I can’t win, like with FB, if it goes down, I’m happy and if not, I make money…
joecParticipantAll comments are pretty true. Just depends on what you want to pay for…Most people who want to move to TX don’t already have a place here or have a place next to the beach that they can afford to do those weekly walks/etc…For people who want to have more space/a home, there’s no question that the size/space of house you get for the same 500k in TX is going to be much bigger than San Diego proper…However, you could also live in the outskirts of SD far east, etc for pretty cheap too. Course, you still have to deal with some negatives like state income tax so if you are a high earner, that may sting…I know some consulting and doctors who pull close to a mil a year so moving to TX alone saves over 100k in income tax. Property tax, though higher doesn’t catch up to that difference.
Bottom line is it depends on your situation like most things in life.
For a homebody like me, nice weather/sun/etc/etc is a waste. I’d be just as happy in a cramped studio in front of a computer playing a video game all day…while it rains outside constantly.
joecParticipantAnother point is that homes in Plano would be a lot cheaper so for a younger workforce wanting to start a family, TX isn’t the worst thing in the world…

There are guys who are desperate enough to marry just about anyone..my ex ex GF had a student loan balance of $70,000 7 odd years out of school and made only $34k/yr. It was revealed that most of this debt was acquired through extravagant “living expenses” in college and of course she justified it as well. In addition she lived way above her means and had close to $0 in the bank (paycheck to paycheck living)Just like many women here in Orange County she felt she was just entitled to have an expensive wedding, raise a large family, be a stay at home mom etc. and the expectation was that her mate would pick up the pieces…nevermind the fact that she had not done any diligence with her financial affairs to prepare for all the things that she wanted.
Now, found out she is just engaged to some bloke. Well, what was unacceptable to me was apparently acceptable to him so, there IS indeed someone for everyone I guess…
I’m sure there are people who have so much money they don’t care or it isn’t a concern. I know of friends who are so loaded with family money (asian) and I’m sure at their age now, their parents are just wishing they would get married and start having grandkids (getting to 40). I wouldn’t be surprised if the mail order bride came in personally…
Anyhow, I think the whole LA lifestyle and most metro places (bay area) is to live like that. Most young women have no money and a lot of times, they feel “entitled” or “I work hard, I deserve this.” Maybe it’s my immigrant childhood or having seen real poverty in foreign countries.
Anyhow, I think a lot of people will just end up marrying later or staying single.
It’s already happening since more women graduate from college now and get advanced degrees as well (law, medicine) so there are simply less “eligible” men in their eyes (makes more money than them).
If they get a poor guy, woe is the guy after a few years…
