Would love to hear more reputable solar companies…I think the federal credits expire in 2016…
joecParticipantThanks for the pic post…Being the sick bastard and jerk I am, so happy she is getting tried and hope she gets prison time…maybe at least some plea where she gets some time and a guilty rap sheet on her permanent record.
What’s bad for her case I think is that there were multiple people who went to the house and even when it got that far where someone knocked on the door and left, she continued to tell the person to come back, she still wanted it and more…you can read the transcript.
No backing down and saying it was a joke, sorry, it went too far, etc…
If she gets off, what’s to stop any sicko ex-bf to get other people to continuously stalk ex-gfs with pics, ads in craigslist, etc?
joecParticipantMaybe it’s also more deadly because by the time you figure you have it, you could be dead in 10 days…it’s that deadly I’ve read. Hard to do much long term research when all the carriers or infected people are dead before any treatment can be tested.
Also, after a certain point when these outbreaks happen in the past, they just quarantine everyone and wait for people to die/burn all bodies and try to contain it.
I did read that some people survived it and were carriers so it’s possible…but the majority don’t seem to.
It shuts down all your organs and attacks everything so it’s a pretty gruesome way to die…
At least it’s quick (and unfortunately, very painful).
joecParticipantI think the concern is that unlike AIDS, you can get Ebola from minor things like tears (someone rubs their eyes), touches a surface, you sit or touch the same surface with your hands, you sneeze, cover your mouth, etc…
Sweat like someone else said as well…
Overall, sounds like a more deadly virus since it can survive outside the body I’ve read and “could” be airborne from a sneeze or sweat, etc…
All in all, safer to just stay far away if you can.
joecParticipantEnjoyed your write up and don’t know much history at all on this topic so I have no real opinion, but maybe the US is going with the which country/government is worst for me so they side with Israel by default?
It doesn’t sound like there’s much government/structure in Gaza other than Hamas which I suppose the US doesn’t like. Makes it hard to take “the other side”.
In terms of civilians, all war is pretty bad and there are a lot of innocent casualties, but does this also have a little to do with possible terrorists hiding in said safe place? If you, as a criminal know that you won’t get bombed in a school, you’ll just surround yourself with kids/schools, etc…all the time and run your operation from there…
Not that I’m saying it’s ok to bomb kids, but if a terrorist is shooting rockets at me from a school, I believe I’d fired right back at the school as well.
Ultimately, it goes back to my belief that 1 life you know (say your child, your wife, etc…) is worth more than a billion in some other country you don’t know or care about.
joecParticipantMaybe they could have subsidies for desalination or something…Major downsides I see are lots of save the oceans/whales/dolphins/sea lions/environmentalists blocking any major expansion. I’d assume energy use is also high for desalination plants and those 2 reasons are probably why we don’t do it already.

”
Due to relatively high energy consumption, the costs of desalinating sea water are generally higher than the alternatives (fresh water from rivers or groundwater, water recycling and water conservation), but alternatives are not always available.

Your best bet is going to be solar panels. 🙂
We haven’t hit $500 yet, I said that $1K was “more than” double. As an example, my house (about the same distance from ocean as yours) had these bills last year ($/kwh)
$114/615
$87/510
$78/480
$83/496
$145/720
$235/1033
$267/1139
$264/1117
$410/1410
$133/621
$91/503
$116/585We are doing the research on solar right now – a lot of good posts on this forum about that as a matter of fact. Once we get far enough along I’ll probably start asking some q’s to fill the gaps in my knowledge.
Yeah, I’d seriously consider solar if I had a spare 20k around and I see some people with it, but alas, no such thing for me yet…
Like you, it’s sorta amazing some months, energy use can be that high since you can probably keep yours < $100 as well without the A/C. Downsides I see with solar is that I think SDG&E and many other power companies will start raising base transmission (access) prices and just charge people another $10-$20 just to connect you since everyone wants to kick their power company to the curb so they're going to find a way to get their profits (investments) to simply hook you up to the grid. In short, they're going to force solar people to pay their fair share too. There are many articles about this. http://www.cnbc.com/id/101319945
"
In California, the No. 1 solar state in panels installed, lawmakers let net metering continue but directed its public utility commission to devise a new program by 2017 to ensure that nonsolar customers aren't burdened unfairly in paying for the grid.In Arizona, regulators voted in November to allow the largest utility to tack a monthly fee of $5 onto the bill of customers with new solar installations. Arizona Public Service originally sought a $50 surcharge.
"July 24, 2014 at 5:58 PM in reply to: OT: Portable Air Conditioner for a room vs. Central air to save money? #777027joecParticipantHeh, I guess I should just stop complaining and just pay the cost for using my central A/C more. I’ve seen some months, my electric/gas bill can actually get as low as $60-$70 per month. The key is staying out of the tier 3 level since there’s a huge jump in prices there).
On heavier A/C use, I see $175-$200 per month and I felt that was too high already. I can’t even imagine 500 or $1000.
This whole idea of mine is to try to get my portable A/C so I can get energy costs down to more like $100/month or so for hot days.
This is for a 3000+ sqft place in 4S.
July 23, 2014 at 6:23 PM in reply to: OT: Portable Air Conditioner for a room vs. Central air to save money? #777013joecParticipant
when I bought my house in vegas, the AC was not working in July. So I setup an window AC for a few days until I could have the AC repaired (needed a capacitor).
That first month, the bill was more than other months with central AC.
I did some research. It has to do with the SEER rating and how well insulated the house is.
If you want to cool just one room, you might consider a mini ductless unit (one of these you hang on the wall and the compressor is outside).
Minimum standards are pretty much what builders put in.
Older than 1992 SEER 5 or 6 (Super Energy hog)
1992 SEER 10 (energy hog)
2006 SEER 13 (30% more efficient)
2015 SEER 14those are manufacture dates. But your house might have older AC units already produced when the house was built.
I’ve looked at houses being built in San Diego over the years. Most new houses have only fiberglass insulation. Few have radiant heat barriers.
Thanks for the info everyone…
I was actually only looking at the dual hose/exhaust models where you draw in air from the outside, and also push it back outside to keep the air equilibrium I guess. My house is from 2009 so I’d assume the insulation is decent.
As this is for the office where I literally spend 18 hours a day, it gets hotter than the rest of the house since all the office/computer equipment (printers, multiple monitors, storage devices) as well as people constantly being in the room. It just gets noticeably hotter compared to any other room in the house.
I know the portable types aren’t as efficient as the window models, but I don’t really want a window one since it’s probably not even allowed in my HOA and I don’t really want something sticking out of the window.
The room isn’t too big (maybe should get one rated to 200 sqft due to extra equipment generating a lot of heat) and I probably wouldn’t need a huge one, but most models seem bigger than that for dual exhaust models and if they also have a heater and dehumidifier.
I was considering something like this which is overkill, but the prices seem to be around this range anyways for dual exhaust and the features I want (have it auto expel water, etc…):
Would be very open to smaller units with similar features (probably save more power too).
As this is also sitting in the office permanently, it would also be a business expense.
Just wanted to hear more if anyone has tried one of these.
Running the central air is ok, but I’d assume if I only need 1 room cooler than the others for most of the day and night, this would still be cheaper to run for most summer days.
joecParticipantFunny how someone is posting back…I hope they do know that it’s very possible to track down which machine this was and if it’s a public computer, that place probably has cameras as well…
That said, I’d agree with the other posters that agreeing to some minor crimes while something like this could have ended very badly sounds like a wimpy cop out.
joecParticipantIt sounds like these people already had very bad credit and wouldn’t get any loan anyways…that being the case, is there a way they can take advantage of their situation and just keep getting car loans at whatever rate and make no payment?
I suppose the wealthy financial industry has probably already thought about that and charge a hefty buy deposit I’m guessing.
Funny that the private equity firm is getting out now after doing this again and making millions…
Sucks to be poor in America with a gamed system keeping you down.
I don’t really feel too sad for these people though. If you don’t have money or assets, hopefully not all of your friends or parents or whoever won’t at least give bad financial advice…course, this is probably the norm since financial literacy in this country is pretty pathetic.
joecParticipant
Although it would be nice to divest assets and max out credit prior to going out in a blaze of glory.
I’ve known foreign students in college who did this…max out credit here, then leave back home…
I suppose this wouldn’t work for student loan debt unless you were willing to leave the US.
joecParticipant

Article in UT about this today:
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2014/jul/18/tp-rape-ad-case-moves-forward/%5B/quote%5DOne step closer to justice! I wish the felony identity theft charges hadn’t been reduced to misdemeanors, though. This woman needs to go away for a long, long time. She is scary.
BTW, I wonder if people would be less sympathetic if it were a man who did all of these things.
Also, how would people feel if she “was” actually attacked by someone responding to the ads?
Just talking to my wife, women sound much more worried with scary looking men in general staring at them, stalking them, etc…where as a guy, I tend to not be afraid of most near any guy walking about…
I’d assume most men would find it refreshing when women actually come up and be friendly to them.
joecParticipantJust posted last week:
Anthem Blue Cross is now being sued…
”
The suit says that Anthem, the state’s largest individual health insurer, delayed providing full information to consumers until it was too late for them to change coverage. Anthem also failed to disclose it had stopped offering any plans with out-of-network coverage in four of the state’s biggest counties — Los Angeles, Orange, San Francisco and San Diego, the suit says.
”If you have Anthem, you’re so screwed…I really hate them.
