Participant

Symbolism, whether it be a flag or a cross or a wedding ring, is such a ridiculous thing to spend any time and effort on in the first place.

I agree. For people it’s all about MY flag, MY religion and fidelity to ME.
Pretty stupid to get overcome with rage and anger over symbols.
Brian,
Can I ask why you finally decided to post this now? All of your previous posts defended their behavior and their right to conduct it. Now you appear to be condoning it calling it “pretty stupid to get overcome with rage and anger over symbols”
If it was so stupid why were the 1st Amendment rights of the students wearing the American Flag curtailed by school administrators?

Participant

And, ultimately because of this cognitive dissonance, and because of all the talk about Aztlan, and the rampant evidence of hispanicization, where historically white cities like Santa Ana turn Spanish-speaking in the course of one generation … that makes white citizens unsure about the real intentions and allegiances of those immigrants … and that’s why they are worried.
If white people are worried, then that’s their problem, no?
I’m not worried.
And events like this one, where immigrants actually feel offended by the sight of an American flag, make them worried even more.
The Hispanics students weren’t offended by the American flag. The school administrator though that white students wearing the flag could lead to a fight. The admins were trying to prevent flare ups, for everyone’s safety. Remember preemption?
Brain are you therefore advocating preemptive actions to restrict 1st Amendment free speech which may be offensive?
Could it therefore not also have been interpreted that the Mexican-Americans celebrating a Mexican holiday in an American public government building may have offended the local population of American students. Based on this logic the Mexican-American students should have not been able to demonstrate their support for the holiday either and the school administrators we negligent in their duty to provide a safe environment for the American students.
Why am I wasting my time trying to teach Brain1 the basics of logical thought, critical analysis and functional use of rhetoric?

Also Brain I would like for you to personally advocate my celebration of the July 4th holiday celebrating American independence from an imperial Britain in Mexico. I would like police and governmental protection
Jim, there are millions of Americans living abroad and they do so because they can enjoy a pretty good living. In foreign countries, the police will give Americans better protection than their own citizens; because they know that if something happens to an American, our State Department comes down hard on them.
Go to any country where is there an American presence or American tourists. Americans celebrate the 4th of July just fine. Hotels have special events for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They even celebrate Halloween.
In the end, it doesn’t matter how other people treat us. It’s how we treat others that is important.
Next time I am playing the role of an expat I will make sure to ask the hotel staff to take down the local nations flag on the 4th of July and raise the American one so I am not offended. I will make sure to pass along the anecdotal evidence you placed in this post to convince them that it is the right thing to do.
