Participant
Well, there are hispanics and there are hispanics.
This is correct on many levels. Look at the API trend lines in the Los Angeles Unified to illustrate this point.
One of the problems facing LAUSD is some of the hispanic culture there place a limited value on higher education. Specifically, many families expect the kids to go to work ( usually for family business) after the 8th grade.
This coupled with the number of kids who are english learners often haven’t had the necessary foundation education. ie. the 3 r’s. This affects these numbers greatly.
English is weighted almost 50% up to grade 8 in the API tests while it drops to about 30% weighting in the 9-12grades.
As Eugene suggests, it is important to look the elementary feeder school scores carefully.
I would say to do a site visit for any school you are considering and meet the admin, teachers to gain more information that doesn’t appear in the empirical data.

ParticipantCompliance with this school policy ensures the district gets reimbursed under the federal nutritious lunch program. Of course, I not thrilled with the fed holding the states over a barrel like this but it is not a new idea and that is a different issue. Same with the parents contacting the idiotic press.
I am however troubled in the way the principal choose to handle it. The kid is in the 3rd grade. Sending her home on detention really doesn’t change behavior. It just escalates the situation.
A good school administrator understands kids minds and would do something like make her the, “Sweet Monitor” or something that motivate her to set the good example. Simple, like a ice cream Friday once a month for 100% compliance would certainly work at this age level. And that would still fall within the State guidelines.

Participant

Symbolism, whether it be a flag or a cross or a wedding ring, is such a ridiculous thing to spend any time and effort on in the first place.

I agree. For people it’s all about MY flag, MY religion and fidelity to ME.
Pretty stupid to get overcome with rage and anger over symbols.
BriBri, You need to have a cup of coffee with someone who has seen combat. They may be able to enlighten you. Short of that at least go see a graduation at our own MCRD. Symbols are important part of what America stands for, especially OUR flag. Anyone in the military will help you with this concept. After all they put their lives on the line for your right to state ill informed opinions.

Many people feel that this “Hispanification of the American West and, California in particular” isn’t unstoppable, nor is it something that needs to be embraced. While a variety of cultures might be embraced, when one particular culture overwhelms a country over a short period of time, problems are bound to occur. If that new “majority” culture encourages behavior that is deemed to be agressive or threatening toward the existing culture, you’re going to get a culture war. That is the only thing that is guaranteed here.
Illegal immigration is **illegal** for some very good reasons. We cannot have unchecked immigration from poor countries where a disproportionate number of these immigrants engage in violent/criminal activity. We cannot have unchecked immigration if the existing taxpayers are expected to pay for the immigrants’ (and their childrens’) educations, housing, physical and social infrastructure, food, legal expenses (including prison expenses), etc. There is a limit to what we can afford to give to everyone from outside of our own country (some would argue we can’t even take of our own citizens).
Bingo. Well said CA.
