ParticipantUpdate: I made a purchase from BH and here is the deal. Use the Payboo card and pay no tax or use any other payment and you pay tax.
Sign up for Payboo credit card from a link on Bh. Online fast approval. Use this card to pay for your stuff.
The invoice shows merch cost, sales tax, subtotal, then a direct deduction for the sales tax amount as line item subtraction listed as Payboo card savings and the total amount you pay.
You don’t have any store credit to carry, it is a one to one instant sales tax deduction if you use this Payboo card.
Be aware of the ~20 day grace period and a 30% interest and probably steep late fee.
And… you don’t get miles points as you did if you used you own credit card.
Not plugging them but just reflection my experience how to get stuff at ‘no tax’.

ParticipantWouldn’t the tourists in the summer be a pain? Not on the trail, but in town clogging roads near your place.
But since you are up there that much, go for it!

ParticipantRemember, you control the 529 until the designee turns 18yr. Up until then you can very easily change the designee as you see fit.
After they turn 18 they control the account you are locked out so have the kid add you so you have visibility on the account.
They are not attuned to managing a ‘portfolio’ so you can help them while they focus on studies.
We had the situation where all of the 529 was not spent and grandpa wanted the rest to be used for a down payment. (no one else to transfer to) Say hello to 10% penalty and tax.

ParticipantBibbs: At your income level, fin aid will just be loan offers. The parent contribution portion will be high.
Any 529 is considered liquid cash. Your retirement funds are noted, but are not a factor in the fin aid calc. Same with home ownership and business assets.
They will tell you you don’t have to sell your house, nor dip into retirement to pay for college.
Flu is spot on regarding the 529 advise.
Of course at private univ, residency doesn’t matter.
The emancipated minor angle is legit and will qualify kid for more grant money as he has no income nor assets. I don’t agree on doing this just to save a buck.

ParticipantAnother example of his character ( corruption?). Just like his strong arming Ukraine to fire prosecutor
Interesting that he put it writing… maybe there is a dem faction out to sink him and replace with Hillary 3.0??

ParticipantI’ve been using these guys for years. Local as in LA and they stock all the bits.
A TDS (total dissolved solids)tester is handy to tell when the membrane needs to be replaced.
Remember, in a RO system the membrane does the heavy lifting. The first two filters help scrub chlorine and solids to help extend the life of the membrane. Filters after the membrane are to polish the water for taste. Including adding an alkaline minerals, if you wish.
(now you can make your own Kangen water!. those who don’t know Kangen is a >$4,000 machine to make alkaline water. sold through multilevel marketing pitches)
The UV light is not necessary for city water, maybe well water. IMHO

Participant“Financial Aid” is a bit of a misnomer. FA actually is a combination of your personal savings, (529, cash), state/fed grants, scholarships, work study with Fed adding to student earned income, school grants, and loans. Both parental and student.
All bets are off if you are an accomplished athlete, musician, or a dreamer in Ca.
As mentioned, private schools tend to have more endowment available for need based grants. State and UC’s, not so much.
At this point, the op is just salting away $. Good.
He will become deep in the weeds soon enough, especially when he has to fill out the CSS profile and other school specific financial disclosure forms where they ask for a ‘full’ breakdown of your net worth! ..cause you probably ain’t getting any free $!
That is when you pull out the 529 and just pay the bill ;).
Another wildcard is that you just don’t know if your star kid is actually college material at this point. Lot’s will be happening in middle and high school!
So, you can always take your $ out of the 529 by paying tax and penalty.
Oh, and don’t forget that the very generous grant and FA package made to freshman can quickly dry up the following year. Hey the kid doesn’t want to leave the school, and they now don’t have to incentivize you with $ any longer. I’m looking at you USC!!

ParticipantThey are really pretty simple. You have a lot of options as to what the investment instrument is. Just research it as any other brokered investment product. ie mutual fund
If you take any money out non educated related, you pay at your normal income tax rate state/fed plus a 10% penalty.
Can’t remember if the checks toward education are paid with 2 signatures or just directly to the institution.
This calculator will help you evaluate a particular plan:

good info here too:

ParticipantDon’t be surprised if the 20′ is $400 to remove (no grinding) and about the same $400 per tree for trimming.
It will depend how high it is and if it has ever been trimmed before( how big the skirt is). Smooth trim on entire trunk will be $$$.
Tree guys work hard for their money and it ain’t cheap!
Access affects price as well. Can they reach it with a bucket lift or do they have to climb.

ParticipantSince we are talking ‘farming’. I’ve had a squirrel problem with my fruit trees. Couple of hawks moved in and between my cat and the bird, no more lost fruit.
Try a “Black Hole” for your gophers. It is a box with a hole in one end. You bury it so the gopher thinks he has to fix the hole. When he trys to push soil out, the trap pinches him. Better than bait, for now.
Cat is 50/50 with gopher. Flying beetles eat the fruit and are pia flying into you. Don’t have any solution for those bastards.
Don’t get me started on the damned crows. They are so smart. A BB gun only works for a week or two. They recognize you and fly off before you can get a shot. Not to mention they wake everyone up!

ParticipantMy tree guy is booked 45 days out now. Not sure when this will hit, but to conform to new emission laws, they need to be getting new chippers. So expect a price increase too.
I get those green beetles in my plum trees.
Overheard a funny story: “When tree trimmer showed up in a Mercedes for the estimate, I knew that trim was gonna cost me!”
