My two favorite trends in bad real estate photography are: shots out the car window because the photographer was either too lazy or too scared to leave the car, and the terrible Photoshop makeovers.

ParticipantDepends which mountain you’re referring to but up at Mammoth there’s a new charge station at the corner of Old Mammoth Road and Main St / Hwy 203. There’s also one at the Film History Museum in Lone Pine.

ParticipantMy very first “real” job (apart from paper routes and such) was at Jack in the Box. It was a pretty shitty job, but then I think everyone should have a shitty job at some point in their life. And a shitty boss too, so that they know what not to do when they become a boss themselves.
But I digress. So I’m doing my cashier thing, and some guy comes in with his two kids, orders a bunch of food, I deliver it to their table, and go on with my duties. About 15-20 minutes later he comes back with his tray and says he wants his money back.
“I’m sorry, what was it about your meal that you didn’t like? I can prepare you something else.” I should note, that they ate it all, three burgers, fries, soft drinks, the whole thing. Consumed. All he said was he wanted his money back. “Can you tell me what you had?”
“I had fourteen dollars!” he snaps at me. Even if I wanted to refund his money, I couldn’t. Voiding a sale requires a manager so I go get him to deal with it: “hey Bill, some asshole up front wants his money back.”
So the manager opens up my till and voids the sale and gives the guy back his fourteen bucks and change, and once he leaves, begins to lecture me about how I should never refer to a customer as an asshole. I protest. I said this is not a customer you ever want coming back. He’s obviously grifting. It’s not like he had a legitimate complaint, he and family ate the whole thing. They probably pull this crap everywhere they go.
Nope. The customer is always right. I did eventually get fired from that job, but that’s another story, hahahaha. Anyway, I share your daughter’s outrage. Terrible people need to be called out when they do obnoxious things.

ParticipantOur house came with some furnishings, including a waterbed frame with integrated nightstands and a matching chest of drawers in the MBR. Years prior we had done the waterbed thing already and it wasn’t for us, but we liked the furniture so we just bought a king mattress and set it on the waterbed frame.
After about 15 years we decided to replace the mattress in the MBR and after sticker shock, decided to try an Ikea mattress, only to discover that Ikea king mattresses are not California Kings, so we had to send it back. Ended up getting a mattress from some shop on Morena. We didn’t need a box spring, just the mattress. It’s a nice one and we paid about $800 as I recall.
In the guest bedroom we got a queen mattress and box spring from Ikea. It’s the second-from-the-bottom Ikea mattress and it was $299. I liked the mattress so much I bought a second one to put in the RV. That bed is great – I think I like it better than the one in the MBR.
If you find one you like, Ikea mattresses offer a pretty good bang for the buck.

That must be their assumption. But add on, what, 30K or so to demo the house, another 20K or so in permits, 200K to build anew, and I’m not sure there’d be a lot of wiggle room for profit given the risk. All for a place on a tiny lot with no prospect of a view. I guess there’s somebody out there with balls that big but it’s not me.
I think I missed the thread with your nosy neighbor. That really sucks. So what was the end result for you? We’re you able to get the work inspected and approved post hoc?

ParticipantI happened upon an open house in OB last week. This was a supposed duplex on a skinny (i.e. single, 25′) lot in the heart of OB, Brighton or Long Branch or one of those streets. The front unit was a very small 2BR 1BA saltbox. It had absolutely nothing going for it. The rear “unit” was what appears to be in illegal garage conversion. It received power from the from unit via flex conduit with exposed Romex under the eaves. Had a toilet but no shower, and no kitchen. Presumably whoever lives in back does their cooking and showering in the front unit. Either that or they shower at the gym and eat out for all their meals. You obviously can’t rent that unit it out legally, so who knows what total rent this dump would pull in. Asking price was $740K.
I don’t understand this world anymore.

I’m curious what you were quoted. Our home was $242 last year, and the rental houses were $186 and $182.

ParticipantI dunno about “most” or “5-10 years” but I think Clairmont has very good long-term prospects, particularly the mountain streets. Older houses, true, but large lots, and very centrally located.

ParticipantYeah, it was weird who she packed the board with. Presumably it was to win lucrative VA contracts. As I’m guessing you all saw, a couple days ago the WSJ reported that they’d just invalidated TWO YEARS of tests using their flagship Edison testing product. They’d been faking their data all along.
