ParticipantThe lottery is a tax on people who can’t do math.

ParticipantIf you like a firm mattress, check out Ikea. Their mattresses are super inexpensive and all of them are quite firm. Queen size ranges from $170 – $850. We bought a $250 one for our guest guest bedroom and I liked it so much I bought another one for the RV. They have a 90 day return policy.

Participant
What is the benefit of using hot water in the laundry?
Hot water is a better solvent than cold water.

ParticipantThe AMEX thing looks like a pretty good deal if you do a lot of air travel, but not if you don’t and I don’t. I’ve had the Citibank AAdvantage card for about 20 years and I still have about 100k miles on American that I need to use before they expire. They’ve made it a lot harder to redeem them, and there’s a $100 annual fee, which is why I switched about a year ago to the Capital One rewards card. No fees, lots of standard benefits (rental car waiver insurance, double warranty, $500 reimbursement for purchases lost/stolen/broken in the first 90 days, etc) and 1.5% cash back on all purchases. Seemed like the best deal going at the time.

ParticipantHmm, somehow I missed this old thread. Anyway, I was fascinated by the story of Charles Hatfield, the infamous rainmaker who was hired by the San Diego City Council to end a drought and refill Lake Morena. Now, some will say he was a scam artist, and he may well have been one, but it rained so hard that mudslides and flooding killed at least 20 people.
I’ve never killed anyone (that I know of) but I do sometimes tend to overdo things a teeny bit.

ParticipantIt’s unfortunate that AIPAC has made it impossible for any US politician to take any kind of remotely balanced approach to the region.
The situation is a total, intractable mess. At the same time, when you carve yourself a country out of somebody else’s land, you gotta expect there’s gonna be trouble. It would be like Texas gaining its independence by seceding from the union, only to have France come and claim it because parts of Texas were once French.

Participant
II found that American Standard or Kohler low flow toilets are the best. True that the old low flow were not good so you ended up flushing twice, but 1.6 gallons x 2 is still less than 5 gallons.
Toto G-Max. One flush does the trick, every time.

ParticipantI’ve used D&S a couple times in the past and was happy with the results. We tented again about 3 months ago and got similar bids from D&S and Corky’s. Truly Nolan was almost twice as much. We went with D&S again.
If you have a tile roof, pay close attention to the terms of tile roof guarantee.
I’m personally not a fan of the topical treatments, because they can only treat wood where it’s accessible. It seems very likely to me that if you have termites where you can see them, you probably also have them where you can’t.
The laws governing the fumigation process have gotten more strict, and the crew chief from the team that tented our house suspects that in a couple more years it may not be possible to fumigate in California anymore.

ParticipantNot in the House, but they would in the Senate.
And this is some pretty funny shit, btw.

ParticipantI’m a huge fan of the MJT, it’s pure genius. I try choose my guests wisely because not everyone will “get” it, and I try to tell them as little as possible before visiting.
Not really a “bizarre” museum, but if you’re at all into technology, the Deutsches Museum in Munich is not to be missed. It’s sort of a cross between the Exploratorium and the Smithsonian. They have an amazing musical instrument collection as well as a great collection of cars, bikes, and motorcycles, plus some life-size tunnel-making exhibits and a big faraday cage you can climb into and get zapped with 100,000 volts while dangling 30 feet above ground. What’s not to love?
In Florence there’s a great museum of beautifully crafted Renaissance-era scientific apparatus. As a bonus, they also have on display Galileo’s middle finger.
The Musee Mechanique in San Francisco has a great collection of old arcade games, pinball machines, carny games, and mechanical dioramas. Admission is free and most of the games and devices cost a quarter.
I’ve been trying to get up to the Steam Engine Museum in Vista – in fact we almost went today but the day got away from us.

ParticipantThis country really went off the rails after 9/11.
We had bin Laden cornered in Tora Bora when Bush yanked all the troops out for his little Iraq adventure. Had we just finished the job and gone home, hundreds of thousands of lives would have been spared (not to mention untold trillions of dollars). What a tragic waste of time, money, and lives. It will take generations to undo this mess.
I wonder what Bush had on Tony Blair – why did he go along with it? (Interesting bit in the Economist about this, had the UK not gone along with the plan it may have been enough to stop our blunder. No speculation offered though on what was in it for Blair).

Participant“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” — Benjamin Franklin*
Best beer I’ve had in the past two years was a wet-hopped IPA from Latitude 33 called “Wet Hump IPA.” My God it was good. They had it at the Regal Beagle and I did my damnedest to drink that keg dry,
Current favorite is Ballast Point Sculpin. I’m enjoying one right now in fact. Originally was hard to find on draught but now quite prevalent. Racer 5 and Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA are also favorites. Green Flash IPA is not bad either.
* this quote is wildly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, but there seems to be little or no evidence he actually said it. But I don’t care.

ParticipantOn the other hand, after decades of enduring military coup after coup, Costa Rica disbanded its military. They still have national service, but it seems to mostly be spent doing WPA and CCC like projects. They have an amazing network of really well maintained national parks.
