ParticipantYou are certainly doing very well, but, at your age, many variables, as have been previously mentioned, must be considered.
In my age group (50’s), generally speaking, I agree with $2MM–excluding real estate–especially if you plan to retire in CA. For those in their 30’s, I would think $3MM+ might be more realistic, especially since I’ve heard from younger friends, that many financial planners today are telling their clients in their 30’s and 40’s to plan on $0 Social Security and Medicare.
The trick to all of this, is, of course, to actually get to retirement–the next phase of life, or whatever each of us might choose to call it with these reserves still intact, and the health to enjoy life at that particular point it time.
I wish you the best on your journey!

ParticipantWe have homes in RSF and Del Mar, and I think it will be a real challenge to find what you are looking for in Del Mar for the price you are willing to pay.
I would suggest you might want to consider working with one of the realtors on this board in order to determine your best options. That way, you’ll be aware of all opportunities that may come along.

ParticipantAs a native San Diegan who has lived in or visited just about every state in the U.S., and other countries, personally, I wouldn’t permanently live anywhere but San Diego. Granted, we got our “dream homes” here when things were more “affordable,” so that has some bearing on the issue.
We’ve had many friends who want to move here question the very same things you are questioning. Basically, they are asking, “Why can’t I get what I want, at the price I want to pay?” In your case, around $1M. My response to them is, “If you can get most of what you want here–just enjoy it and live your life!”
If you’d prefer to look elsewhere, that’s great, too. You’ll find pros and cons to each and every location–including San Diego. It’s really all about what’s most important to you and your family.

ParticipantER–From what you’ve posted, it sounds like you are on the right track to finding your “Dream Home.” Renting in CV is a great way to really check out each and every location you’ve mentioned.
As a San Diego native who lives in Rancho Santa Fe, and as someone who owns a lot of rental property here and elsewhere, I’ve found you really need to get a feel for the area in which you are considering living. After completing all of your research on each location, as you are doing, there’s just no substitute for actually experiencing each of them with your family.
Have a great time finding your “Place in the Sun!”
