ParticipantThis is a great thread–thanks to all for the fun reading material ๐
I just wanted to mention that detached homes for $600K do exist in CV–we just bought a 1360 sq ft house near Carmel Creek Elementary. Walking distance to all schools, shopping, playground/park, great family neighborhood, no Mello-Roos, $55/mo HOA.
OK, not so much of a backyard, but the kids can also play in the front yard. And some might think it is too small for a family of 4, but we like the floorplan a lot (no double family/living room) so it is working out fine for us. SO HAPPY with this purchase!

ParticipantI just moved from a home in a neighborhood with almost exclusively older owners with grown kids to a neighborhood 1/4 mile away with smaller homes and younger owners/kids. (Both are in Carmel Valley.) We made the move primarily for the neighbors/community. It is already making a huge difference–our kids are outside playing with their new friends instead of holed up inside in front of the video/computer/TV screen. We are so happy we made the move. So my 2 cents is: don’t discount the importance of the type of neighbors that you have.

ParticipantFlu, I always knew I admired you. As the mom of an 8-year-old, I say you are RIGHT ON. The culture is the problem, and we need to give girls perspective on it.
One great program is Girls on the Run http://www.girlsontherun.org/. My daughter participates in the group in Carmel Valley–what a great organization. Lots of discussion of values, the media, etc., in a very non-preachy way. Combine that with teaching girls the joy of running, and completing a 5k race at the end of the session. Highly recommended!

ParticipantI agree with the majority here–it’s an imperfect bill for sure, but at least someone finally took a step. It’s amazing how gridlocked Washington is–they really seem like they can hardly do anything at all.
