CoronitaParticipant

Lol….
So one of my senior mobile engineers, the one that I previously said was working out of his RV/trailer traveling the US, decided to resign from my company. He’s going on a 6 month hike from the mexican border to the canadian border.
I was like, man that’s cool. I wish I did that when I was younger. So I tell my boss’s boss that his last day will be next week. To my surprise, my boss’s boss told me to ask him if he was interested in going on a 6 month sabbatical. I didn’t even know sabbatical existed at my company. I was told, “not officially”…. lol….
Sounds like your boss knows how difficult/impossible it will be to replace a senior engineer. And here we are kicking around the idea that remote work is on the way out. Maybe we should kick harder so it goes away?
I know how hard it is to replace a good senior engineer, but I didn’t think it was possible to compete against “I’m going on a 6 month hiking trip”. He’s taking the sabbatical deal. Lol…
What a great idea! Sabbatical for me also! Got the ok from the boss
I am sad to see him go for 6 months but I would totally do it before I settle down. Going on a hiking trip from border to border is one of those once in a life time events, and job security 6 months after he’s done is probably a once in lifetime arrangement from a once in lifetime cool boss and boss’s boss.

So when’s your sabbatical gonna be?
I am afraid that won’t work for me. if I told my boss I was going to take 6 months off to work on my cars, my boss would tell me “best wishes for your next opportunity at your new company”…. As the only one left from the acquired company’s senior management, I think my boss is counting the days I find something better so they can take over..maybe I can rest and vest a little longer and make it to my 3rd year.
CoronitaParticipantLol….

CoronitaParticipant
I want gas money from Newsom
You have an electric car, lol…
CoronitaParticipantI drink coffee black because I just like the taste. Decaf is fine with me. Tastes better than beer imho.
CoronitaParticipant

And in other real estate news–don’t think this will affect any of us. Personally, we haven’t been flipping for awhile, so I’m not concerned–not the core of our business. There are lots of things going on in the world that could have an impact on real estate, but I don’t think this will move the needle much, if at all.
SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — A state law maker from San Diego says short-term investors are contributing to the housing crisis. Now he’s introduced a Bill he says will give average people a chance to own a home again.
Flipping houses is nothing new. You purchase a property, make necessary changes and then sell it for a profit.
But Assembly member Chris Ward, from the 78th District, says that process is hurting the housing market and keeping average people from buying a home.
The California Housing Speculation Act or Assembly Bill 1771, is designed to change real estate tax policy and discourage some investors from quickly reselling properties like single family homes.
“It would be an additional income tax on the profit gain from a sale that occurred within three years of the previous sale,” said Ward.
Ward is proposing an additional 25% tax on the gain from the sale beginning January 1, 2023.
He says research shows U.S. investors bought a record $63.6 billion worth of homes by late last year. Nearly three-quarters of that was single family homes, the highest level it’s ever been.
“But we’ve also seen this influx of short-term investors trying to get into the market, outbid San Diegans and Californians with all-cash offers, and drive the prices up for everyone,” Ward said.
Ward says California does have a housing supply deficit, but profits continue to grow by 26% each year, which isn’t sustainable.
University of San Diego real estate professor Norm Miller says the Bill may help, but California’s tax laws are still more favorable to investors.
“But if you’re an investor, an institutional buyer, not only do you get unlimited tax right offs from the mortgage interest and the property taxes, you’ll also get depreciation, which is something an owner does not get on their own personal residence,” Miller said.
“So, if somebody’s trying to go in there, fix up a fixer-upper and then sell it for record profits, that is distorting the market because somebody else could have gone in there, done the same and kept the home,” Ward said.
Interesting proposal…. Maybe this should be in its own thread.
Ward is misguided and probably doesn’t understand economics. How can limiting available inventory help buyers (assuming the extra tax reduces supply because owners will wait 3 years).
His quote makes this clear :
So, if somebody’s trying to go in there, fix up a fixer-upper and then sell it for record profits, that is distorting the market because somebody else could have gone in there, done the same and kept the home,” Ward said.
Doesn’t he realize that the people in the market who might buy the home and fix to live in it already have that opportunity.
Lol on the proposed bill….

CoronitaParticipant
Gets to the point of real Gas shortages (station closing etc…),
I think we will get some type of no/don’t commute order.
Actually not a bad Idea to get ahead of it and do it now IMHO.
In 1979, i remember my parents driving when fuel was rationed. Plates ending with an odd number could only fill up on specific days, even ending plates on the other days.
It’s not forcing people to WFH, it’s giving employers an incentive to encourage people to WFH, no different than handing people a trolley/bus pass for free. Better than simply reduce fuel taxes or give gasoline tax credits that Newsom is proposing.
CoronitaParticipant
LOL. I thought about changing it but appearing so tech unsavvy on a thread about tech workers just seemed like the more appropriate way to go
just flip your monitor around.
CoronitaParticipant
Seriously I think I would have a very hard time giving up coffee in the morning and beer at night.
Oh well I guess there is always decaf and non-Alcoholic Beer.
You never tried beer+coffee in the morning?

CoronitaParticipantWith over $5/gallon of gas, perhaps one of the federal and state energy policies would be to help consumers reduce consumption..
A quick and dirty solution would be just to give companies a financial incentive to allow more employees to work from home more, so they don’t need to be on the road as much.
It’s not that far off from the reality. When I was in L.A. interning for a defense contractor, they gave an employee that wanted it a free coaster shuttle shuttle that would pick you up and drop you off to and from work. You didn’t need to pay for gas and time going back and forth between the office, which was like 45 minutes 1 way. L.A. did this as one of many ways to cut down on traffic congestion.
CoronitaParticipantDZ posts individual new articles about each company that is going to a hybrid mode, which isn’t that much of a surprise. But we’re posting report after report of trends in the tech job market and specific in san diego… Here’s a report about why office leases in San Diego haven’t fallen off a cliff.. Again, demand from life sciences and biotech, that as we said in threads above, require in-person offices since they are companies that require labs….
