CoronitaParticipantThe choices we have for internet really suck. It’s either ATT uverse, ATT dsl, time warner, or dish satellite (which is slow as hell). Oh, there’s the wireless options too but those are capped.
CoronitaParticipantI just dropped my ATT uverse internet service too. Switching to time warner.
Same price, just pissed at ATT.
CoronitaParticipant
When I was also searching for CPO previously, the prices also didn’t seem that good if you can negotiate well for new…I guess that depends on the car, but with insanely low interest rates, sometimes new wasn’t more than CPO since your selection options are limited for CPO and I never bothered to see how hard the dealers are willing to come down. Just seemed brand new wasn’t that much more at all compared to the CPO prices I saw online.
A good example of this is an FR-S. Buy a 2014 CPO one here, it runs about $23.. Go up to L.A. and buy a 2016 one that is new, it will run you about $24.9. For $2000, I’ll take new please.
imho, either go cheap and get a cheap used or go all out and get brand new. I have a problem spending $40k on any used car, unless there’s some collector value to it.
(In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a fan of the FR-S as an inexpensive track toy. It’s like a miata, with a hardtop that you don’t need to worry as much if you were to roll it over running on real track. Plus, plenty of CARB legal mods for it.)
CoronitaParticipantFYI: San Dieguito School District does not allow one to pay off the MR early. However, the MR is guaranteed to be fixed for the 35 years duration, so they say….Well, at least CV doesn’t have all those other added bond initiatives that other places have (for now).
Del Mar Unified has yet to call me back about what the situation is there.
CoronitaParticipant
flu –
I think you know I paid off my house prior to retiring early. For me it allowed me to plan a retirement budget that was MUCH smaller than one that included mortgage P&I. It’s a little different situation than yours, since you’re younger and still working. If I was still working I would have put the extra money into investing… I have a fairly conservative asset allocation (60% equities, 40% bonds… 100% in index funds rather than individual stocks.)The piece of mind having no mortgage is nice for me. Others feel differently and would rather have debt and more money to invest. We’re all wired differently.
I was hoping you would be one of the people lurking around here and would post!!! I actually got my inspiration to pay off my mortgage earlier from you. Although my 15 year mortgage has a low 2.5% rate, I started to contemplate paying things off earlier because I felt I had too much concentrated in the stock market (individual funds, indexes, etc), and wanted a safety cushion of having a big debt paid off in case the markets go really down and my portfolio tumbles 50+% over the next few years. (I don’t think it will, but I really don’t want to take any chances IF it does). This year, the stock market didn’t treat me as well as I had hoped, and I had a lucky windfall from an acquisition and sales of other stock at the beginning of the year. So it was my way of diversifying out of the stock market and trying to get rid of my largest monthly expense. Plus, I don’t know when I will go into early retirement (voluntarily or forced 3-4 years down the road), so I guess I’m trying to play it safer now at least to guarantee I have 1 decent primary home to live in, if the rest of my finances/career crumbles.
Despite all this, I still feel like I am way to concentrated in the stock market, and was looking for more of a conservative/reliable investment. Though, I guess once I have my primary paid off, and keep my rental income in mostly cash, I guess I can afford to take more risk by staying in the markets.
The other thing I have to investigate. I am going to see if I can pay off my Mello Roos. I’ve been told that for Carmel Valley, this isn’t an option, but I’ll find out.
CoronitaParticipant
Fasting glucose of 100 is getting close to pre-diabetes. I doubt it is the four fruits a day, more likely the effect of your prior habits.
AFAIK your sodium level is not a concern.
CRP is good proxy for heart disease risk not on your test. It is a cheap test if you are concerned about long-term health.
I think I was on empty stomach for 8 hrs. Anyway, my glucose is all over the place since a lot of times, I get an IV that throws things off.
CoronitaParticipantOk thanks folks… I do my blood work every month for other reasons, and while it drifts around, it’s usually within the range, though on the high side. Last test was as below. I was just concerned maybe I was getting too much sugar from fruit.
Glucose 100 (Standard range 70-115)
BUN 12 (6-20)
Creatinine .86 (.067-1.17)
Sodium 141 (136-145). Ok I need work on this.
Potassium 3.8 (3.5-5.1)
Chloride 104 (98-107)
Bicarbonate 25 (22-29)
Calcium 8.8 (8.5-10.6)
Total Protein 6.5 (6-8)
Albumin 3.8 (3.5-5.2)
Bilrubin .99 (<1.2)
AST 32 (0-40)
ALT 28 (0-41)
Alkaline Phosphate 49 (40-129)I forget what my cholesterol was from last time, but it was normal.
CoronitaParticipant

You’re son probably isn’t a bully, but it doesn’t sound like the other kid is ok with receiving these jokes either. I guess my initial thought was if this other kid was fine with the horseplay, why isn’t he dishing it out himself, and why would talk to his dad about it? I mean, @ junior high, you are smart enough to figure out what is considered PC and what isn’t. So if this was really just horsing around, the last thing I would want is to share it with my parents. It would be like hearing a funny, yet crude sex joke in middle school, and then going home and sharing it with your parents. Ewe…
That said, it would probably be in your son’s best interest to lay off the “little bitch” and the “yo mama” jokes at school. Eventually, it’s bound to be overheard his female peers, and then he’ll be in deep shit with the school’s administrators.
Yeah, I told him if he keeps this up and it gets to an administrator it could mean the end of his basketball career there.
As for the other kid, son says he kept coming back and trying to join their group; glutton for punishment or clueless? I mean why keep coming back to his group, there must be plenty of other better, more PC cliques or church group to hang with right?
I think I’ll tell my son to just say hi and bye and stay away from that kid for his own protection – my son has always been edgy and South-Park and I can’t totally trust him to resist off color behavior that may reach the wrong ears.
The problem with social media is that once someone takes a gopro and films someone do some uncanny behavior, it will stick with that person indefinitely. Also, in the ultra-PC environment we are currently in, the backlash is enormous. There’s plenty of examples of it that has happened. I’d suggest perhaps you might show some of those to your son as an example. I recall there was two guys at a tech conference that was making stupid sexual jokes privately. Apparently, some woman sitting nearby got all offended by it. But rather than confront the two guys, she took a picture of it, it and put it on social media, I guess as a mean of social shaming. And the backlash was enormous. First the two guys (who were just geeks making stupid jokes were both married) we subsequently fired. The woman, also fired from her job for eavesdropping on a private conversation and posting something supposedly private in social media (more likely because some hacker group broke into her employer’s system and threatened to publicly post her employer’s client list if she wasn’t fired).
As far as a sense of humor. Well, there’s nothing wrong with being a class clown. You just got to do it in a way that doesn’t piss off 1/2 the population, especially considering whe he’s in 8th grade, he’s going to be interested in that 1/2 of the population.
Meanwhile, tell him to go work and bulk up if he gets pushed around. Chicks will dig it once he gets into high school if he’s a buff jock. Take him to the gym yourself if you have to. I wish I learned that.

Can you get a job with a decent amount of vacation time and travel with the family during school vacations? Or have more time for hobbies/volunteering/doing what you want to do?
I think short of working for the government, my current employer is as good as it’s going to get for work/life balance.
I start out with 4 weeks of paid vacation, adding 1 week for each year of additional service up to a maximum of 7 weeks.
Also, we are required to take a 2 hour “recess” (3 hours if you count lunch time) one day out of every week in the afternoon to do anything but work, with the condition that we’re suppose to try to use our products during that recess.
My work hours are basically from 9-6pm, though I do try to get in by 8:15am. I don’t see much email past 6pm and on the weekend, unlike at my previous employer.
I just hope this work environment lasts for another 2-3+ years.
CoronitaParticipantI missed the part about what your girlfriend says and what your brother says. Some other things to think about…
You have no kids (for now). Make sure that you have alignment on that plan with your girlfriend, because that might not be her plans. And if two of you can’t agree, that’s probably something to think about.
Speaking of which, that girlfriend of yours, assuming it’s not a fly night night girlfriend, will probably at some point, want to live an house that the two of you own. So unless she already owns, in which you can just freeload off of her financial planning, that’s something else to think about.
And lastly, sorry to say this, contrary to what your bro thinks. At 41, with only $50k in your 401k, frankly that isn’t much. And let’s not forget the years when you were posting here that you couldn’t find a decent job because the tech industry went south.
When that tech recession hits again, and it will, it’s probably going to impact you a lot harder this time around. Considering you are 41. You’re not alone in cross the 40 mark as a techie. But for me, I don’t plan on things staying this good in the tech for me as I approach 50.
CoronitaParticipant..But to answer your question. Yes you can afford it. Do you want to and is it a good move? That’s completely different. Personally, before I were to spend $40k on a car, I’d be spending $40k towards a downpayment toward a house, especially if I already had a paid off truck and two motorcycles. But that’s just me.
CoronitaParticipantI don’t think the tech market here is that bad. I know my company has been hiring and there’s a been few contacts over linkedin about startups.
CoronitaParticipantYou are buying the wrong car if the only purpose of you buying it is for commuting. For you, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between an is250 or an is-f…unless you care about bragging rights that you have an “f” and/or you plan on being a riceboy that tries to “race” Honda civic between stoplights. (Please don’t That’s just retarded). And frankly, call me biased, but when I see an is-f, I think “why?”. That IS-F is a big porker at 3780 with an automatic (no, it isn’t dual clutch). So sorry, it’s no M-competitor. I have not seen anyone bring an is-f to an autocross or track btw.
Save yourself some money. If you want an affordable sporty car, get an FR-S brand new for around $25k from LA dealers. Add a $5000 carb legal supercharger to it that will bring that 2800lb car near 300hp with a pretty flat torque curve, and call it a day. And I have seen plenty of FR-S ‘s on autocrosses and tracks.
