CoronitaParticipant
Elite private schools have limited capacity and the cost is the major control mechanism. LJCDS already has all the kids they want. They would just increase the cost by whatever the value of the voucher is.
I am a bit surprised that you would argue against Common Core, FLU. Important purpose of math in school is to develop problem-solving skills and common core math is doing that. It is the path that matters, not the number at the end. My 4th-grader can solve quadratic equations, but as long as he cannot explain the solution he is just a well-trained monkey.
The absence of common core does not mean you don’t teach problem solving skills. I think that’s the misconception when common core didn’t exist teachers didn’t teach kids problem solving skills. But what I do see is that In the quest to try to get our kids to “think” more, they are missing key fundamentals. And it’s not just about arithmetic. The biggest problem why I think math is lagging here is lack of practice.
As an experiment, I asked my kid out of the 5 different ways she learned how to solve a problem, which one she still remembers and uses. And basically, it’s the old fashion way. All the emphasis on friendly numbers etc, very seldomly used in practice in the curiculum and at home on in this country, since on a day to day usage, this concepts are never reinforced regularly. So they will be forgotten. It’s a little different in our household, because a lot of the problem solving we make my kid think everyday, and it’s this constant practice which is what I think sticks. Every trip to the grocery store is a few math problems…. What’s worse is if a kid remembers half of the strategy and not the complete strategy and ends up trying to apply a misremembered strategy.
CoronitaParticipant
AN, if you live in an attendance area of excellent public schools, what do you have against them? Do you currently have any kids attending public school in your neighborhood?
If not, how do you know your public school will offer a sub-par education for them?
If I could get a Porsche at slightly more than Toyota Camry prices, I’d get the Porsche. Because a Porsche is still a Porsche, and a Camry is still a Camry, even though there is nothing wrong with the Camry.

Mine’s been malfunctioning since Trump won and the dow reversed course….
Can I borrow yours? Your’s seem to be working very well these days. I’m serious… You’re on a roll :)
LoL, I wish mine works as well as you think it is.As for voucher, I’m freaking giddy like a kid who just got their Christmas gift early at the thought of the possibility of getting a voucher system in place w/in the next year or two.
Don’t get excited yet. Let’s wait for what happens. I’m just freaking excited that the market isn’t tanking.
CoronitaParticipant

At public dollar expenses!!!!! Voucher systems could land you in a private school that isn’t required to use common core math. lol.Actually, I was talking about common core math with a bunch of parents recently. A lot of the parents that had older siblings were complaining about how the younger sibling, now a product of common core math, were well behind their siblings when they were at the same grade level. Some at the 5th grade level, still can’t do basic arithmetic, even some of the teachers mentioned it.
We never quite bought into to CCM and just did it the old school math and old school problem solving, and played lip service to the N-different ways of solving one problem, drawing a nice pretty diagram, etc. Looks like it ended getting better results. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But those are some pretty good 4-5 different “strategies” that kids come up with to solve the problem. Too bad, in most cases, none of those strategies helped kids reach the correct answer.
Public $ is already being spent on my kids’ education. If anything, I’ll be saving some tax $, since the private school I want to send my kids to charge less than what we’re paying to educate my kids in the public school.
As for common core. I actually don’t mind. I think it’s good for them to understand multiple ways to come to the same solution. I’m making my kids to the math drill that you and I did. I view that this will expand their breath in ways of learning math. That’s what my kids teacher convey as well, where we should do the math drills at home so they know the basic and what they get taught at school is more breath.
I agree on your first part. And the voucher system would be a very interesting and compelling thing…I wonder how much tuition to Bishop school would be ๐
I’m not totally against common core. I just don’t think the way it’s taught is useful for most kids, as it adds confusion than anything else.
But that’s just me.
CoronitaParticipant

flu, she’s actually not anti-common core. Although, she’s not pro-common core either. So, I’m assuming she can be swayed one way or the other. But the biggest thing about her is that she push for private school voucher. That would be F*cking AWESOME if she can get it done before 2017-2018 school year.
AN, I thought you previously posted here that you live in an attendance area of awesome public schools!
Not as awesome as the private school my kids could be going to.
You DO realize that “school vouchers” will only pay a portion of private school tuition (unless they are Catholic or Protestant – Grades 1-8 only, which tend to be less expensive). I would surmise that you will only receive 1/3 to 1/4 of the tuition from a voucher to pay for any non-denominational well-known private school in SD and possibly only enough to pay 1/5 to 1/6 of the (exorbitant) tuition for private HS through your kid(s) voucher.
Wow, your crystal ball is working that well?
CoronitaParticipantWait… The world isn’t flat and it evolved?
CoronitaParticipantLol… Looks neither sides like here. Perfect! She’s for voucher and supported common core…. Lol. But maybe you can still have it both ways… Go to a charter school that ain’t teaching common core.
Edit: noticed she’s also a billionaire elite. I bet all her kids go to ivy’s.

But Trump is also already drawing fire from both sides of the political spectrum for his pick. The largest teacher’s union in the country slammed DeVos within an hour of the announcement for her advocacy of charter schools and school voucher programs, while conservatives quickly pointed out DeVos’ association with groups supporting the Common Core education standards, which Trump has vowed to nix.
DeVos chairs the American Federation for Children, a group that promotes charter school education, and also served on the board of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, a group led by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — one of Trump’s GOP primary opponents — which promoted both school choice and the Common Core education standards.

CoronitaParticipantVouchers would be kinda cool. Get more for paying less.
CoronitaParticipant

tmobile seems to be giving out crazy deals. Just found out I could have gotten the LG Stylo 2 Plus smart phone free as well as the free lines. Seems bigger if not better than my current LG G3. Probably too late now though.
I am not familiar with that LG phone. But it is
Not too late if you want to deal with a phone call to T-Mobile. T-Mobile has 30 day change period. Give them a call, they will most likely comp you the phone.I did that with my S7 I ordered for work. I didn’t wait for the promotion, and the next week they offered a free VR glasses. They ended up just comping me for it. Though it was a waste since I don’t regularly use either the S7 or the VR gear. Just for testing. I hate dealing with Samsung phones so at the end of the day, it’s the last thing I want to carry home.
The pixel is probably the only phone I would actually spend my own money on if I had to. T-Mobile offered 1/2 rebate on it.
Spending time with customer service is not something I enjoy. My G3 seems good enough. Not worth the effort, I’m either extremely busy or extremely lazy. More likely both.
Totally understand. I called them up, enter my mobile callback number, and then after about 20 minutes, someone from tmobile calls me back and I talk to them. I didn’t actually stay on hold waiting for them, fyi.
I tried to do their chat message system but they didn’t even respond after 15 minutes so I didn’t want to call. But glad my brother isn’t lazy. I will be getting two of the phones shipped to me in three days. I wonder how Tmobile is making any money? Two free lines plus two free smartphones.
Most people will be paying for $100-150/month for 4 lines… Your brother and I are probably a few that pay around $60/month for 4 lines. They’ll make up the profits over the next few years because once they got all of your family members on the same plan, it’s much less likely you will switch, even if prices stay the same.
Plus, for the next quarter, they will be able to brag about how their subscriber base grew, which is always good news for their earnings call. T-mobile is trying to grab market share from the other 3 and trying to retain customers with their deals and friendly customer service. I think it’s working. They are basically doing what verizon wireless use to be like, although with an arguably crappier network. (San diego is ok…Places like SF is terrible.. I can’t even get a uber cab in the SFO terminal)
CoronitaParticipantOh, random fact. Donald Trump hates t-mobile. Lol…
http://mashable.com/2015/11/16/trump-legere-twitter-fight/
T-mobile CEO is kinda nutty..(twitter fight aside)…But I guess his approach is winning over customers….

CoronitaParticipantThis Black friday might be the last time you can get a free phone. There might be 35โ tariff on all phones starting next year, since no smartphone is made here.
Heh heh
