ParticipantWe took time out to go to the last one, what a waste of time…this is just the new marketing technique and properties got bid up to market value or over market…still some of the banks didn’t take the bid…unbelievable. I even noticed that this one has been even more publicized in paper and TV ads. I wouldn’t waste the time again. I think there are still plenty of people out there that think now is a good opportunity to buy and will be there bidding these properties up again…sentiment is changing, but the media and realtor hype on real estate still continues.

ParticipantWe are a bit like you guys as we cashed out in Feb. 06 and have a young family (expecting #2 any day now). I have the same concerns at getting my daughter into the right schools, but she is only 2 1/2 now so I have a bit more time. If I were you I would try and get a rental at least in Encinitas. This would at least put you in the school district you want. I have a friend that taught in the area, I will ask her for an assessment of the different schools and post it sometime this week.
I too don’t think it is such a big deal to move within the same area if you have to when the time comes to buy a home. If your child is just in grade school they will adapt very well. (on the other hand if my child was late Jr. High or beyond, I don’t think I’d want to disrupt their school ties).
Best wishes for your decisions. I also congratulate you on having that much cash in the bank at your age (we’re just a bit older than you). You have done all the right things up to this point for you and your family’s future and now we just have to keep emotions out and stay the course!

ParticipantWhat kinda choices have we had for candidates? Not great ones…maybe the governator will get the constitution changed and run?? (yes that’s sarcasm)
I think the biggest issue is the media…they really control the bias set against candidates…what successful, smart person, wants to have their entire lives discussed and trashed…with all the media bashing and irrelavent info. during the elections it’s hard to know what to think. It will be interesting in ’08!

ParticipantWe’re looking into the same thing…I’m going to look into the Foreign Exchange funds (like FXE)….is the risk to these that the Euro would go down in value against the dollar? It seems to me that this is a pretty conservative investment strategy (we’re being pretty conservative with money we’ll need to reinvest in a home).

ParticipantHaving just moved back down here from Ventura Cty., we have recently gone through the job search/offers. San Diego jobs definitely DO NOT pay the high salaries as other areas. The employers call it the ‘sunshine factor’. Yeah great, so I get sunshine but pay the same cost of living. This is the reason the housing prices started slipping here first in ’05 when the rest of So Cal hadn’t seen much impact….yet.
The pricing is overpriced here, or you can look at it in the reverse, the employees are underpayed! Also there was some discussion before on various industries here in SD. We are still believers in the Biotech world. There are companies that provide drugs that can greatly increase a patients quality of life. Hopefully more of the SD start ups will hit on something big to bring more jobs here. With UCSD research as a center to all of this, it is still very likely that over the next 10 years SD will develop some strong home grown Biotech firms. Also, I don’t believe this work will be farmed out so easily to the Asian countries. This avenue has been looked at by the major biotechs and it was deemed NOT favorable. The only slight possibility is that Singapore may be able to come up to the standards that are necessary to manufacture. Other than that, not going to happen. There are many other places that offer enough tax shelters that would offset risks of going to someplace like China where quality is not even in the vocabulary.
