Participant[quote=Allan from Fallbrook][quote=briansd1]Of course Newt Gingrich is extremely intelligent.
My problem with Republicans like Newt who used faith and religion as wedge issues is that they don’t have any moral compass of their own.

Spot on analysis Brian. If you go back and read the Contract with America, at least 4 of the tenants had to do with forcing Christianity on the masses, if I am not mistaken.
He was a veritable Billy Graham preaching from the house floor.
/sarcasm off
Faith and Religion as a wedge? Newt?
Allen when I lived in DFW Dick Armey hosted a speech by Walter Williams that I attended in my more political days. I’ll be damned if I remember much about the content but I am certain much of that night was not the kind of speech you’d hear these days.

ParticipantI definitely agree with your take on the GOP. Now with the Ron Paul/Rand Paul folks, it makes me wonder if the Tea Party folks (to which I am not one) might cleanse the GOP of the pandering that the party has become.
Sean Vanity carries the torch…
Just curious as he’s basically considered a RINO by the hard-core right, plus he as a spotty past, but where did you come down on Newt in the 90s? I haven’t listened to him or given him much thought recently but I seem to recall him being an excellent orator, extremely fast on his feet, and a tough guy to debate. Now that he’s threatening to run, I wonder how he’ll do.
If he somehow won I can’t imagine he’ll have the mass downer effect on pubbies that Dole and McCain did, but he still has a lot of enemies with the party.

ParticipantNewt is a troll.
I am as far from a modern liberal as anyone on this site, and his post just makes me cringe. By the way I say that as an Evangelical personally who is more of a live and let live kind of guy Allen. Maybe I am not really an evangie, I just prefer churches with good music, its uplifting and more spiritual for me but I don’t expect the whole world to live by my code. (By the way in my late teen/early 20’s experimentation with all things lib I loved listening and reading Daniel Patrick Moynihan).
Newt just blasts 5-6 lines and disappears. He probably isn’t contributing much else beyond that. I am too lazy to open another window but during the elections there was a conservative that posted all over O-T ad nauseum and didn’t seem to enter into other forums. Wouldn’t surprise me if “dude” was gettin’ paid. I get real suspicious when there is little talk of housing, the local economy etc.
