When buying, getting something built with better building codes is good. Is there a time they changed a lot? If so, when? I tried Google, but no luck. I’m sure there are various minor changes, I’m thinking of something such as “two years after the xx earthquake, building codes were upgraded to require more [good stuff]”.

If I went further north would I experience more of the same or does it ease off at some point? I may have to try just to see.

But depending on where my wife finds work, I suspect we will wish to be close in to SD. Plus this particular one isn’t walkable to anything; I wish the kids to get some exercise by going to what they usually do, e.g. to the park. http://www.walkscore.com/score/1062-MATAMO-Pl-EL-CAJON-CA-92019
