Participant
To go 500 miles, you probably need a 150 KWH Battery pack. WIth head room for life cycle and protection from “Bricking”, you probably need some 220 KWH.
at $700/KWH, thats a 150K in Battery alone.
a $300/KWH, that’s a 70K battery, plus motors, car, etc. it’s probably a 120K vehicle.
Teslas strategy has been to aim for about 200 Miles range, then stick Superchargers around at nodes and to cut up 400 mile legs.
I have to say Tesla’s strategy has been apparently sound.
If they can get 300 miles from 85kWh from the Model S, then they only need 140kWh to get 500 miles. 220kWh battery would be an over kill.
But you do bring up a very good point, and that’s the fact that battery is expensive and supply is limited so far.
How can you say Tesla’s strategy is sound when it hasn’t been implemented yet. Also, it’s one thing to convince the to 1% to buy a halo toy. It’s another thing all together to convince your average buyers in the $30-40k range to buy something that’s is as limiting as EV in its current form. I personally thing FCV would be much more likely to replace ICE cars than EV is. I’m not sure about you, but when I do road trip, I like to drive at night and I don’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere for at least an hour to charge up my EV. At least w/ FCV, you can refuel in the same amount of time as gasoline. EV has its place, for those who don’t do road trips or those who have a second car to do road trip (300+ miles one, not to LA from SD and back).
Anyways, only time will tell whether Tesla’s strategy is sound or not. It’s way too early to tell.

ParticipantCan CarmelV pass some of that good crack to Mira Mesa? We can use some of that good stuff.

yah :'(. Too bad I wasn’t as aggressively as I should have been in 2009-2012. FYI, inventory was much much higher between 2009-2012. ParticipantSome technical side of the problem: http://www.alexmarchant.com/blog/2013/10/22/healthcare-dot-gov-lines-of-code-comparison.html
There are almost 10x more code in Healthcare.gov than Windows XP. A website vs a freakin’ OS. There’s about 8x more code in Healthcare.gov vs Facebook.com. Keep in mind Facebook.com does A LOT more than just signing up people and checking their eligibility. Also, keep in mind that for a similar scaled website like Healthcare.gov, it have around 25-30 million lines of code.
http://money.cnn.com/2013/10/23/technology/obamacare-website-fix/index.html?iid=Lead
Expert who analyzed the code said it’ll be faster to just blow it up and redo the whole thing.
But the amount of code is really only the side effect of the true problem. The root of the problem is this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/10/21/the-way-government-does-tech-is-outdated-and-risky/
They used water fall methodology on something that isn’t well spec’ed out from day one. The developers who worked on the project saw steam coming out of the projects months ago. They said there were real test being done except by the government. There were requirement changes at the last minutes. When they tried to do a light load test, the system fail with just a few hundred users. So, yeah, those who knows software development knows all of the things they did is the recipe for disaster.

ParticipantVery interesting map ocrenter. I guess that map invalidate a lot of my examples, hehe. I totally agree with you about live and let live. If people in Sorrento Valley really care, let them have it. Carve out all the houses along Sorrento Valley Blvd. and call it Sorrento Valley. If it makes them feel better, why not let them. I personally think houses in SV are over priced for essentially being MM, since their kids goes to MM schools. But if they like to be able to sell their over priced house to other gullible future buyers, then let them.

ParticipantFunny blurb on the dispute from Fox5 news: http://fox5sandiego.com/2013/09/23/sorrento-valley-neighbors-fight-for-their-terf/#axzz2iW5aDoZ6
In the video, they showed a map defining Mira Mesa from 1965. The guy from Mira Mesa Town Council stated Sorrento Valley is a neighborhood and not a community. What’s also funny is the one lady who lives in Sorrento Valley who said she never go to Mira Mesa. I wonder where she goes to get her grocery? Where does she go to see a movie? It just sound like a bunch of uppity people who got duped and are now upset to finally know the truth.

Participant

All of this is kind of like Torrey Hills saying they’re not Carmel Valley or Park Village is not Rancho Penasquitos or Sabre Springs is not Scripps Ranch.
Sabre Springs is not Scripps Ranch. That’s not even arguable. Did you mean Carmel Mountain Ranch?
Sorry, you’re right, Sabre Springs is not Scripps Ranch, it is Rancho Bernardo, just like Carmel Mountain is Rancho Bernardo, just like 4S Ranch is Rancho Bernardo, just like Del Mar Mesa/Pacific Highland Ranch/Palacio Del Mar/etc is Carmel Valley, or Fairbanks Ranch is Rancho Santa Fe. I can go on and list many other examples but I’m sure you get my point.October 22, 2013 at 10:34 PM in reply to: OT: Upcoming civil war between Sorrento Valley & Mira Mesa #767184an
Participant

The houses in Sorrento Valley are pretty nice… Real 3 car garages. Not the tandem 3 car garage (2 car garage+ extra storage) bullshit….
There are plenty of houses in other part of Mira Mesa real 3 cars garage. My development have 3 out of 4 models with 3 cars garage option. Houses North of Calle Cristobal all have 3 cars garage. Some South of Calle Cristobal houses have 3 cars garages too. There’s another development next to Summerset apartment that also have 3 cars garage options as well.
Ok, let me rephrase this so it’s clear.
Spending $1million+ on a 3000+sqft house in CarmelV with still a 3 car tandem garage is well, just bullshit…
not bullshit because you don’t have to worry about getting shot at. Gotta pay for that best school somehow.October 22, 2013 at 9:28 PM in reply to: OT: Upcoming civil war between Sorrento Valley & Mira Mesa #767181an

Participant
iPads for L.A. Unified could now cost $770 each, a 14% increase
The L.A. Unified School District will have to purchase nearly 520,000 iPads in order to avoid spending nearly $100 more apiece for the tablets, a new school district budget shows. The newly disclosed price of $770, a 14% increase per iPad, appeared in a revised budget released in advance of a public meeting Tuesday on the $1-billion project. The potential sticker shock can be avoided, but only after the district has spent at least $400 million for the devices.
Officials did not answer questions Monday about how much the district would then spend on the remaining tablets.
The earlier cost estimate for each iPad “preceded the actual procurement process,” the district said Monday in response to questions from The Times. “The negotiated discount [to $678] does not go into effect until the district has reached the $400-million spending threshold.”
Just another tiny detail.
LOL. It’s much easier to waste other people’s money than your own. I wouldn’t think twice about over paying for something if I’m using someone else’s money. -
