ParticipantI actually agree with both flu and brian. Preemptive replacement of big appliance might actually save you money, if you can have a good deal on back friday. Obviously, you don’t go willy nilly and just replace appliance every few years. But if you start getting complaints about issues or if an appliance is well past its prime, you might want to replace it before having to deal w/ a service call. I actually went with stainless steel when I replaced my tenant’s fridge. She was very happy about it. The reason I went w/ stainless is because it’s only a couple hundred dollar more. If I decide to sell the house, it might help me sell faster at top dollar, all the while, being able to deduct the cost of the SS appliance as well.

“All power tends to corrupt, absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.”
– Lord Acton
This is why ALL Chinese dynasties over the last 5000 years have an average life expectancy of 300 years.
In the beginning, the leader of the rebellion still have the people in his heart. With subsequent generations, the people become less and less of a concern, especially since power comes from the heaven, not fom the people. As time goes on, the corruption also becomes worse and worse. With corruption you end up with mismanagement, with mismanagement, you end up wth famine. This triggers a new rebellion, a new royal family, and the cycle continues.
America is heading to 300 pretty soon. I would hope the expiration date for a democracy would be longer, but I can certainly see elements of corruption and the concentration of power within the few (aka the Ivy League circle, the NRA, Big Pharma, Big Food…)
Although each dynasty last ~300 years, dynasties last for thousands of years. Democracy is like dynasties, not a specific dynasty. You have different parties in charge and the corrupt will be booted. Although it’s not perfect, it’s still much better than the alternatives. I don’t think you can boot a king w/out an uprising.an

ParticipantYep, I posted it yesterday on this thread: http://piggington.com/sca5_dead_for_nowthis_yeardont_let_the_senate_bring_it_up_ever_a. Here’s another writeup about it: http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/26/leland-yee-arrested-corruption/. It’s not just regular hand guns that he’s trafficking. He’s trafficking rocket launch grenade, over shoulder missile launchers, and automatics. This sound like something out of a good fiction novel.

ParticipantI don’t mind removing MID and prop 13 IF tax rate decrease enough to offset the additional tax, which means my net change tax dollar would be 0. However, I highly doubt that would ever happen. What would more likely happen is the removal of MID and Prop 13 but also increase in income tax. So, my first instinct is to object any kind of such proposal. Unless both tax rate decrease and removal of MID/prop 13 is on the same bill.

ParticipantI switch all of my lights to CFL and all of them are E26 and not GU24. I had to buy a GU24 adapter because the light housing in front of my garage door is GU24. I have no energy comparison, but I do noticed some last less than advertised while others have last for 5 years and going. So, maybe it has to do with the housing itself that cause the early death. I got it over 5 years ago when SDG&E and Home Depot were doing some special deals on them and I got them for ~$1/bulb. I stocked up a lot and still have plenty. I can’t justify going to LED because they’re still way too expensive compare to my $1/bulb CFL.
Flu, wouldn’t it be cheaper to just get a E26 to G24 adapter for the ones that needs it? All of my recessed lights are E26. I got these and seem to be working fine so far: http://www.amazon.com/10-Pack-GU24-E26-Adapters-Screw-/dp/B00BHKZTEY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1395694846&sr=8-3&keywords=e26+to+gu24. Assuming your lights have space for the adapter.

Participant
Affirmative action doesn’t mean that unqualified applicants are let in. It all depends how affirmative action is implemented.
Yes it does. That’s exactly what Affirmative Action is. Lower the bar low enough for a certain ethnic group can qualify. So, as long as you’re the top x% of your ethnic group, you should be able to get employed/admitted. It’s not about how you fair against other ethnic groups.

Participant

Semi OT: Jesse Jackson says blacks inadequately represented in tech companies
Here comes another shakedown …
I would like to ask Jesse Jackson if he would also push for Asians’ inadequately represented in the NBA/NFL/MLB as well. I wouldn’t mind being a bench warmer in the NBA.
Well, if we pass NBA-5 or NCAA-5, then we’ll need to fill asians quota until they score 5% of the total points per game, caucasians need to fill quotas so that they can make up 78% of the total score, hispanics get 17% of the total points…However, we’ll need to quota limit the total points african americans can score to 13%.
I’ll settle for being just the bench warmer. NBA’s bench warmer rookie are making $490,180 and if you’re 10+ years in the league, your salary minimum is $1,399,507. I would totally settle for that. You get court side seat at the game and you get to mingle w/ the stars. After 10-15 years, I can totally retire.March 19, 2014 at 9:46 AM in reply to: SCA-5 Dead (for now..this year…)….Don’t let the Hernandez/senate bring it up in 2016… #772085an
Participant
By the way, I am not saying that we shouldn’t help kids from poor family. But I just don’t see why we have to use race (out of so many other criteria that we could use) to help some of the poor kids out there.
I totally agree and we already have something like that in the book. Poor kids tends to go to bad schools. It’s much easier to be in the top 5-10% in the bad school. I forget the exact % but if you’re in the top 5-10%, you’re guarantee to 1 UC. So, they already have 1 leg up than richer kids. If you have a 3.3 or 3.5 GPA, you’re guarantee in CSU if I’m not mistaken. It’s probably easier to get that GPA in a poor performing school with lower level of competition than the better schools.

ParticipantI personally would keep watch on this. With 2x and 3x ETF, it doesn’t pay to be the early adopter, especially in this situation. I would feel safer to wait for all the fallout to happen and the ETF to start going back up. Maybe once it has been up 10%, then I would jump in. Another good source to use to help you determine when to buy would be: http://www.stockconsultant.com/consultnow/basicplus.cgi?&symbol=RUSL. It has help thus far.
