ParticipantJohn: The only problem with the RNC keeping their mouth shut is this: They are bound by electoral laws governing conduct, and much as attornies are bound by the Canon of Ethics as officers of the court and are duty bound to report certain things, the RNC would find itself in pretty deep water, along the lines of the Watergate investigation into Nixon (“What did the President know and when did he know it?”).
If they know (and that is a mighty big “if”), then they have no choice but to divulge that information and immediately.
Again, if this story genuinely had legs, someone at the NYT or WSJ or WashPost would have spilled the beans. We live in such an information driven age, and a 24/7 news cycle that this would have been an epic headline. Forget the FBI, the MSM would have exploded this across the headlines.

ParticipantJohn: From the FBI.gov website:
“What type of applicants does the FBI investigate?
The FBI conducts background investigations on all persons who apply for employment with the FBI. Additionally, the FBI conducts background investigations for certain other government entities, such as the White House, Department of Justice, Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, and certain House and Senate committees.”My understanding is that Obama sat on a Senate Intelligence Committee. If that is correct, then the FBI would have conducted a background check (based on the sensitive intelligence and information that the Senators on that committee handle) on him. Hard to imagine that they would have missed the whole “not a US Citizen” thing.

ParticipantJohn: I think the question about the FBI vetting Obama for a senatorial question would be fairly simple to answer. I’ll go Google this and find out what the situation is.
I hear you as far as the lawsuit being filed, and, yes, I’m hard pressed to imagine why someone of this stature would file a frivolous lawsuit in Federal court, but that doesn’t preclude it from happening. This is pretty high-stakes poker being played right now, and I don’t put it past the Clintons to use someone as a stalking horse to try and throw a wrench in the machine right now.
If I were a member of the RNC, I would be all over this in a New York minute, and for the reason that it goes to the very heart of electability and “the rules”. If Obama were ineligible, and the RNC was aware of it, they would look completely reasonable “outing” Obama. Wouldn’t you agree?

ParticipantJohn: I don’t have the answer to this question, but perhaps you do (and this goes to the question you had regarding my taking Obama’s “legitimacy” at face value): Doesn’t the FBI conduct background checks of Congressmen and Senators?
I would imagine that there is some sort of governmental vetting necessary, especially for those members of Congress and the Senate that sit on Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees and subcommittees.
Wouldn’t someone have bothered to check if Obama is legit? And, I would have to imagine that if this story had legs, the RNC and their hitmen would be all over it. You correctly point out that this would be a nuke for the Dems, and that fact is not lost on the Republicans. If there was a chance that this was correct, then they would have stuck a fork in him weeks ago, right?
