ParticipantMercenary general – as in retired US military general currently employed by one of the institutes for peace, humanity and global understanding.

Participant
I do agree it is hard to believe Assad would have ordered this as it doesn’t make much sense.
According to a mercenary general interviewed by NPR last week the opposition forces took down a couple of Assad’s planes using Saudi-provided SA missiles, hence the response.
The general did not complain about a Wahhabi country handing SA’s around, presumably because the systems are calibrated to take out Assad’s military aircraft only – they can’t be used against civilian airplanes.

ParticipantYour trapezius seems kind of impressive.

Participant
Not sure why using explosives to kill innocent people happens without response, but gassing them crosses some moral line.
If that is the problem then maybe a permanent tribunal to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression would help?

Or maybe…Absolutely. I’ve said this very thing many times before. The problem is that we have to figure out how to allocate resources in a world where there is falling demand for First World workers who (used to) make a good living. Some of that is due to technology, and some of that is due to the off-shoring of good jobs/importing cheap labor.
Do we relegate all of those former First-World workers to the welfare rolls? Do we expect them to take menial jobs in service of the wealthy few…eating crumbs and living in crowded mud huts, while the rich get richer? How do you see that ending?
What sort of solutions do you see as an answer to the problem?
Have you seen Elysium? I liked District 9 much better.

Participant
this is the best part of the article:
“Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said both deputies have been relieved of duty with pay.”
note WITH pay. Essentially a vacation. Cool beans!
It’s not a vacation if they had to turn in the guns.

By the way, speaking of non-RE related topic, does anyone know if there is any company in SoCal that has an NLP (Natural Language Processing, not Neuro-linguistic programming!) group? There is even a meetup in Bay Area: http://www.meetup.com/Bay-Area-NLP/ So I am wondering if I can find similar groups in San Diego to learn more about NLP.
I believe UnitedHealth has several linguists/CS working on NLP. SDSU has graduate program in Computational Linguistics under the department of linguistics – you might be able to take some classes through their open university program.

ParticipantCould the growth of per capita income be in part due to adjustments in workforce?
The income of males 15y or older grew 6.5%/year between 1970 and 1980 and the male workforce grew from 55MM to 78.6MM. Female income grew at higher rate (from lower base) and more importantly the workforce grew from 51MM to 80MM. The recorded per capita growth of 10%/year is in part due to more people having a job.

Participant
So the suspects are 15, 16, and 17. Good thing Oklahoma’s laws preventing minors from purchasing and possessing firearms worked. Criminals don’t care about your background checks, assault rifle bans, or other laws. They’ve already decided to commit the ultimate crime.

The flip side is that ease of access to guns did not help the murdered guy.

Participant

Why limit a computer to the level of human thought? Why not create them to be perfect! That might answer the question of who made god. Perhaps created by an imperfect race to be perfect. Is it possible? i believe so
Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.
But are you sorry?

Pick different career in your next life. A single, currently active tennis player recently built a 20,000 sqft house (10-car garage not included in the sqft) in Crosby Ranch.

Participant
”Needs” can include future needs. If you’re planning on kids in the next 5-10 years, go for a 3/1 or 3/2, IF you can afford it comfortably with your current income. If you can’t, how the hell are you going to afford kids in the first place? 🙂
I lived with my parents and grandparents for few years in a farm house that had no running water (consequently no washer) until about a year after I was born. I know first hand that a family of N can survive in a small house with no traditional bathroom.
To this day I get sentimental when I sense grass blades on my tushy, but most of the time I prefer my current 0.8 baths per capita living arrangement.
Also, your one offspring won’t be enough to sustain the human race, so I’m simply offsetting your lack of commitment to the needs of the specie.
