I’m still a kitchen remodeling virgin but from my research the only compelling reasons to go with a chimney-type hood are (a) for island installations or (b) commercial ranges that specify no combustible materials above the burners.
There are conventional range hoods that move as much air as the fancy chimney-type hoods. And you won’t have to dismember your existing cabinets π Take a look at the specs on various range hoods — I think you can find something suitable for $1 per CFM or even less.
