OT: Moral of the story….Don’t chase a shoplifter on your breaktime

but the problem is that regardless of what your individual judgment is, you might have to face the judgment of a jury that disagrees.

And who’s to say that the business owner isn’t a gung-ho thrill-seeker who is eager to dole out abeating for any theft.

Does your opinion on catch-and-beat vary if the shoplifter is a14 year old stealing a candy bar? A 12 year old girl?

Don’t we have to teach em young?

Beat the tar out of them and they won’t be shoplifting again.

Society will be better! Good for the community. what about a 10 year old? Or if it’s a senior citizen? Whip em.

it’s not like i don’t see the other side. clearly it is bad for people to be able to freely shoplift. But most people don’t shoplift. And most shoplifters don’t run. And shoplifters who run and use force to evade can be charged with robbery, a strike in California requiring prison unless there are unusual circumstances warranting probaiton. So it’s not like we’re soft on forceful shoplifters. maybe someone could market a gooey tracking device to sell to shopowners that adheres to clothing and operates like lojack which we could throw at shoplifters.

Well, technically, the employees were on their “break”…So technically, their actions wasn’t on company time. On the other hand, they were probably still wearing their company’s clothes.
