ParticipantWhy shouldn’t we be paying more for energy? Clearly what we pay isn’t equal to the true total costs of discovery/extraction/refining/transportation/defense/environmental cleanup/etc. Yes, I understand that higher energy costs are bad for the economy, but maybe our economy should learn to survive on the true costs of energy. Wouldn’t that make it stronger in the long run? Problem is, our current economy is an energy welfare queen.
Perhaps solar/wind/etc would be much more cost competitive if we were paying the true cost for things such as oil & coal. What is the current threshold at which solar becomes cost competitive — both with and without the subsidies that oil & coal receive?

ParticipantLast night the quake hit while I was building my soon-to-arrive daughter’s crib. When it hit I dropped the pieces I was holding to run out and make sure my pregnant wife was safe. I ended up damaging the crib by dropping the pieces on some of the wood. Wife was bummed, but hey, now I can tell my daughter that the dings on her crib were caused by The Great Quake of June 2010.
Does anybody know of any spots that are accessible to see/explore/hike some of the faults mentioned above? That would be a fun day-trip.

Participant
AFX…- Try reading it again and try not being biased. Brian started it with his dear leader Bush bashing. Fair is fair. Brian cannot help injecting politics into the discussion of solar and as usual he is full of it. The increased cost of energy is germane to making the cost of a solar installation affordable.
Brian posted a link to an article on signonsandiego about California’s solar plan. faterikcartman followed with his ‘Dear Leader’ post. Brian followed with his Bush post.
I think you’re the one who needs to go back and work on some reading comprehension Zeit. The thread speaks for itself. I rest my case.

Participant
I’m throwing a flag here! Stop the political threadjack. This is a question about the merits of installing solar systems on homes not Cap and Trade.
Thank you! I wish to someday install solar on the home I will hopefully someday buy, and this thread had been great until the shit flingers stepped in. Perfect example of the type of threadjacking that we don’t need. Note, however, that the jack was started by faterikcartman and his ‘Dear Leader’ comments, not brian. Although brian could have restrained himself from feeding the trolls.
