Participant
But on the 2nd part, you are simply wrong. Single payer is not socialism. Canada essentially has single payer but they do not have socialized medicine. Most retirees in this country are covered by a single system. Medicare is not socialized medicine. You may be opposed to a single-payer system, but fearing it because it’s socialism is fearing the boogie man.
Damn. Once again I forgot my /snark tag and got my post mis-interpreted. I was attempting to point out that many opponents like to claim that the bill will kill business while at the same time opposing single payer — which would have solved the very problem they are talking about.
Both sides seem to agree that insurance should be decoupled from employment. Single payer is a great option to do so, but then the socialism boogie man comes out and it’s all over.
I would have preferred single payer to what we ended up with, but fall in the “it’s better than nothing” camp.

ParticipantWhy is insurance tied to employment in the first place? Can anyone provide a legitimate reason why it should be? Why isn’t auto insurance tied to employment? Why isn’t my monthly cost of beer tied to employment? It’s a burden on businesses, that much is certain. And of course it becomes a burden on individuals when unemployment is as high as it is now.
But single payer is socialism, right? Wouldn’t single payer free business from the burden of high health insurance costs? Oh, but that would transfer the burden to the tax payers, right?
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

ParticipantI am happy for my 5-year old cousin who has been unable to correct a crooked eye because his insurance has decided that it is a pre-existing condition and not cover-able.
I am happy for my brother who is self-employed and is unable to get reasonably priced insurance to repair the hernia that is causing him incredible discomfort.
I am happy for my mom who is too young to get Medicare but too weak from her Still’s disease to get a job that provides health care and medication at a decent price.
I am happy that as a self-employed entrepreneur, I will be able to provide health insurance for my family and afford my wife the luxury of working at a job that she enjoys rather than working at a job that provides us with health insurance.
So, yes, I am happy.
