For anyone that believes the government isn’t spooked about Wikileaks, consider this: a few months ago we got a DOD wide message that if we logged onto Wikileaks with one of our computers we could be subjected to criminal penalty. This was even extended to our personal computers at home if the government found out about it.
Want to know how serious they really are? When I tried to read this thread during my lunch break today I received a message that my “attempt to access Wikileaks has been recorded”. I’m expecting an email tomorrow morning asking me to explain my behavior.
I have to be honest, this site and it’s reach scares me a bit, especially since I’m going to be spending the majority of next year in Afghanistan and I’ll be plenty pissed if my life is endangered by a scumbag like this.

November 30, 2010 at 5:19 PM #634334AnonymousGuestI only believe “conspiracy” theories when there is a clear and simple explanation as to how people are going to make money or gain power. There really aren’t any such explanations as to how Wikileaks does this for anyone in any government.
The simple explanation is that Wikileaks started out as a small group of internet “hacker” types – people who love to get their hands on stuff they aren’t supposed to have – and it grew along with the information age and internet culture in general.
Assange and his crew don’t have much to gain financially from Wikileaks. Their motivation is a combination of moral crusade, the thrill some get from creating mischief, and a chance to receive attention at an international level. There’s not much more to it than that.
Wikileaks’ ethical justification is basically an “ends justifies the means” argument. Not always valid, but it’s used plenty – often by many of the groups they are targeting.
Navydoc, I can’t say if anything that Wikileaks does will contribute to the risks you may face in Afghanistan. I hope it does not. I do know that the people most responsible for any risk you will face are the those who chose to send our military there in the first place.

Perhaps our military and political leaders shouldn’t be lying left and right like it’s about to go out of style.
