Alex, I’m saying what I saw that cashier do at Walmart, I never saw at any other store. I wanted to run from the store. Food 4 less and Winco are ratty stores too. I don’t shop at either of them for that reason. In general, I like shopping at clean, upscale stores. Who wants to shop at a dirty, rundown store? If you’re poor you have no choice, if you aren’t poor, then you have choices.
I can’t stay out of Walmart though, the deals are too good, especially on electronics around Christmas time.
I know rich people don’t like to waste money, and you’re right the fake rich will spend money they don’t have for appearance sake.

I’m no snob, for a good part of my life, I grew up in what could be defined as the “Hood”. My parents were forced into bankruptcy when they lost their restaurant, and I went from a life of luxury to eating food bought with food stamps. What happened to my parents convinced me that I was going to educated no matter what the cost. Neither of them attained college degrees, thus there life is what it is. You will not find me being a regular customer at the stores they shop at.
Have you ever been in a food-4-less?
In stores that cater to the poor as well as those who want to save money, you’re going to find dirty floors, dirty shopping carts, even cashiers wiping their noses with dirty, filthy handkerchiefs.

May 28, 2008 at 10:42 AM #212662AnonymousGuestI love low prices, I purchase items at the dollar store. However, when stores become dirty, and I have to wait in line behind a woman with 12 screaming kids, you will rarely find me in that store.
I will make an exception for Walmart.
P.S. About the cars, I drive a Scion XB (looks like a box) made by Toyota. I paid 16K and change for it brand new in my last year of grad school. It gets great gas mileage and my son will probably get it when he goes to college, then I’ll buy something else. I like it. Just because I don’t want to shop at dirty, ragged stores and live in that type of environment doesn’t make a snob.
Where do you shop, Dave? I doubt I’ll see you in a dirty food-4-less.

May 28, 2008 at 10:46 AM #212677daveljParticipantMarion, nowhere in your self-aggrandizing soliloquy did you bother to actually answer my question, so I’ll repeat it:
What, exactly, “comes” with the poor? (In the context of your statement, which follows.)
“The reality is that Walmart is going to attract the poor to the community, workers as well as shoppers, and all that comes with it.”
Yes, I’ve been in the Food4Less on Palomar Road in Chula Vista more times than I can remember (for reasons that you could not possibly comprehend). No, it ain’t pretty. But the prices are as good as you’re going to find anywhere. For my personal grocery needs, which are minimal, I go to the Ralphs downtown on Market Street because it’s the closest grocer to where I live. If Food4Less was closer, hell, I’d probably go there.
