New York is in many ways a hellhole for anyone making less than 150000 a year. Pre and post 9-11.
Other than the bedbugs, who seem to be doing great on a limited budget:

TG,
You may want to find a way to rephrase that. It’s the most arrogant thing I’ve heard in a long time.
Unfortunately that was the fourth re-phrase, the original included something about how I’ve never seen such a parade of walking vaginas, but that would be an insult to walking vaginas.
Pri-dk, we get along most of the time, in fact I get along with most people. Everyone has a nerve, this one is mine, I respectfully request a pass on this one thread if I’ve gone overboard. I think I’ve earned it a pass this once.
It just killed me to see everyone have such strong opinions about things in which they knew so little about. Like brian’s comment about how long feels a mother gets to mourn the loss of her son, that one got my goat too, I regret even reading this thread to begin with.
I think the best way I can explain it is to compare it to religion. I do not belong to a church, but I understand that many people do. Some give their money or their time to their church. Some go without certain pleasures and some endure sacrifice, don’t even get me started on the amish and mormons. Yet here we are, 2,011 years later and this entire country takes of work for the birth and the re-birth of a guy who reportedly got nailed to a cross. Do I tell them to get over it, it was a long time ago, that three spikes through your extremities isn’t that big of a deal and far easier than a shark bite or wood chipper accident. They can’t explain it to me, how they connect with the stories, how it is important to them, but I also don’t make them explain it. I let them enjoy their day with the respect of a fellow citizen and maybe when they see me or others react with similar ritual and regard to something they don’t fully connect with, they will do the same for me.
Maybe it’s more like professional soccer, I have a hard time understanding the passion some people have for it, but they can’t understand my passions. Yet neither of us want to ban the others emotions and neither of us can explain what makes us who we are because we have had different experiences.
How you die isn’t always up to you, how you choose to live is. I cannot live with the guilt of knowing I could have done more and someone may not be able to live with taking certain risks. If people don’t like it that they don’t make movies praising the guy who took the lifeboat from the women and children on the titanic, or the guy who hid behind a wall in Tienanmen square, opting to praise the ones who were brave, took risks or made sacrifices. That’s just the way it is. Not everyone will get it.
It’s September 12th, hopefully nobody will be bothered by this stuff for a while and they can go back to believing that nobody is better than they are. Feel free to forget.
September 12, 2011 at 7:06 PM #728884scaredyclassicParticipantWas a giant event at local hs. Students told to wear red white and blue. Administrator read apparent excerpts from bush’s post 9-11 war necessity speech, kid thinks. ROTC marched w flags.
Kid is in ap us history, took ap euro history last year. Knows about propaganda, nationalism. Says that was what this felt like. I expressed zero opinion on it previously. I prefer toet them draw their own conclusions although they were raised by me so bias creep will occur.
Guess this military tinged celebration will be every year from now on… He did enjoy it cuz he got out of Spanish class. And he found it historically intriguing.
Me forget about it? Unlikely. I’ll want to come up w better arguments for next year.
To me, this country is the dissent.
September 12, 2011 at 7:11 PM #728885AnonymousGuestTG,
I read your most recent post and read it again. The first time I thought it was complete gibberish with mixed with bullshit, but the second time around it actually made sense.
You get your pass. You’ve earned it, and you do in fact need it on this one.
There are different kind of heroes. Most live lives that are mundane and unrecognized. I could elaborate on examples, but if you can’t think of any of your own then, well, you just don’t get it. But I think you do.
But none us can declare ourselves a hero. Certainly not the kind that you describe. Because true heroes are humble, and the ultimate heroes – the ones that you reference with such passion – are no longer among us.
So those of us pecking on a keyboard philosophizing about what a true hero is cannot actually be one – at least not yet. But perhaps some do have the capacity, and that is admirable even if unproven. If you claim to be a member of this club, I won’t dispute it. Personally, I can only ask God for the the courage to do the right thing if I should ever be given such a test.
(Yeah, I know….Reminds me of that Mighty Mighty Bosstones song…)

September 12, 2011 at 9:09 PM #728888briansd1Guest
As for terrorism, I dont see it being the political weapon you are making it out to be. Right now its about the economy in this country and not much else.
I agree that right now it’s all about the economy. But for the last 10 years, it was all about terrorism.
From what I’ve heard from people in government, it’s all about security. They go to training and seminars all the time and “experts” tell them all the bad stuff out there that they need to prepare for.
Economics is an ongoing competition. We can’t rest on our laurels and expect the next generations to enjoy rising standards of living.
As Tom Friedman of the NY Times put it “tragically after 9/11, we ended up chasing the losers from globalization for 10 years, al-Qaida, rather than the winners.”

I think one of our society problems now is that everyone wants to personalize their experience.
MAAD want strong alcohol laws. Born again Christians want to ban abortions…. Cancers sufferers want a cure; 9/11 families want to mourn in public.
People can mourn privately as long as they wish. But individuals do not have the right to insist that everything is about them. After a certain moment of sympathy, people do not have the right to burden others with their loss or problems.
As first I might be sorry that my neighbor lost her son to cancer. But I don’t want to hear about it all time, and his struggles during the illness do not make him a hero.

‘We’re Getting The Hell Out Of This Sewer,’ Entire Populace Reports
SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 | ISSUE 46•3502.13.09
NEW YORK—At 4:32 p.m. Tuesday, every single resident of New York City decided to evacuate the famed metropolis, having realized it was nothing more than a massive, trash-ridden hellhole that slowly sucks the life out of every one of its inhabitants. With audible murmurs of “This is no way to live,” “What the hell am I doing here—I hate it here,” and “Fuck this place. Fuck this horrible place,” all 8.4 million citizens in each of the five boroughs packed up their belongings and told reporters they would rather blow their brains out with a shotgun than spend another waking moment in this festering cesspool of filth and scum and sadness.
By 5:15 p.m. there was gridlock traffic on the outbound sides of the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, and the area’s three major airports were flooded with New Yorkers, all of whom said they wanted to go anyplace where the pressure of 20 million tons of concrete wasn’t constantly suffocating them.
“I always had this perverted sense of pride because I was managing to scrape by here,” said Brooklyn resident Andrew McQuade, who, after watching two subway rats gnawing on a third bloody rat carcass, finally determined that New York City was a giant sprawling cancer. “Well, fuck that. I don’t need to pay $2,000 a month to share a doghouse-sized apartment with some random Craigslist dipshit to prove my worth. I want to live like a goddamn human being.”
“You see this?” added McQuade, pointing at a real estate listing for a duplex in Hagerstown, MD. “Two bedrooms, two baths, a den—a fucking den—and a patio. Twelve hundred a month. That’s total, not per person.”
According to residents, the mass exodus was triggered by a number of normal, everyday New York City events. For Erin Caldwell of Manhattan, an endlessly honking car horn sent her over the edge, causing her to go into a blind rage and scream “shut up!” at the vehicle as loud as she could until her voice went hoarse; for Danny Tremba of Queens it was being cursed at for walking too slow; and for Paul Ogden, also of Queens, it was his overreaction to somebody walking too slow.
Other incidents that prompted citizens to pick up and leave included the sight of garbage bags stacked 5 feet high on the sidewalk; the realization that being alone among millions of anonymous people is actually quite horrifying; a blaring siren that droned on and fucking on; muddy, refuse-filled puddles that have inexplicably not dried in three years; the thought of growing into a person whose meanness and cynicism is cloaked in a kind of holier-than-thou brand of sarcasm that the rest of the world finds nauseating; and all the goddamn people.
In addition, 3 million New Yorkers reportedly left the city because they realized the phrase “Only in New York” is actually just a defense mechanism used to convince themselves that seeing a naked man take a shit on a park bench is somehow endearing, or part of some shared cultural experience.

New York City
“I was sitting on my stoop, drinking coffee, and out of nowhere this crazy-looking woman just starts screaming, ‘I am inside all of you,’ over and over,” Bronx resident Sarah Perez, 37, said. “Then, we both had this moment where we looked at each other and realized, okay, we have to get out of here.”“This place sucks,” Manhattan resident Woody Allen, 74, told reporters. “It just fucking sucks.”
When fleeing New Yorkers were asked if they would miss the city’s iconic landmarks, most responded that Central Park is just a pathetic excuse for experiencing actual nature, that the Brooklyn Bridge is great but it’s just a fucking bridge, that nobody goes to the Met anyway, and that living in a dingy, grime-caked apartment while exhaust fumes from an idling truck seep through your bedroom window isn’t worth slightly bigger bagels.
“This is no place to raise a kid, that’s for sure,” said 32-year-old Brandon Rushing, a lifelong New Yorker. “I grew up here and I turned into a giant asshole. Why would I want that for my son?”
“Plus, we’re the place most likely to get nuked by a dirty bomb in a terrorist attack,” he added. “So that’s great. Also, it smells like shit here, and I’m not exaggerating. You’ll just be walking around and it starts smelling like human shit, and it just fills your nostrils and you breathe in shit for like 20 seconds.”
Before departing by private helicopter, Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke with members of the media to address the situation.
“You know what the greatest city in the world is?” Bloomberg asked reporters. “Scottsdale, Arizona. It’s clean, it’s not too big, it’s got a couple streets with shops and restaurants, and the people there aren’t fucking insane. This place is fucking insane. And by the way, that’s not a reason to like it. Anyone who says that is a delusional dirtbag.”
By Tuesday night, New York was completely abandoned. At press time, however, some 10 million Los Angeles–area residents, tired of their self-centered, laid-back culture and lack of four distinct seasons, and yearning for the hustle and bustle of East Coast life, had already begun repopulating the city.
September 12, 2011 at 9:44 PM #728891ZeitgeistParticipantWell Brian, with your narcissism constantly on display, I think giving the 9-11 families one day a year is not going to kill anyone. Why don’t you ignore this thread if it is so bothersome to read about what some of us consider heroic actions? TG should have used the stronger version of his diatribe instead of watering it down to man card. I think he is getting too PC. It’s not like he cares what you think about him. He is his own man.

September 13, 2011 at 12:18 AM #728901scaredyclassicParticipanti dont know, man. im still pissed about the iraq war, still pissed about bush and cheney and wolfowitz, about abu ghraib, about all the lying an dopportunism and halliburton and and bullshit, about using freaking NAPALM in iraq on civilians (Mark 77 it’s called) and lying about it to the news agencies, and then saying, well, technically it wasn’t napalm, it’s this new improved shit that’s exacty like napalm and the military dudes who dump it on people call it napalm, and jeez, to me, 9-11 was the key to unleashing a decade of crazy warfare where we just unleash our hellfire with a bunch of lies and kill innocents everywhere because, well, why not, we are pissed, and then they make kids dress up as human flags while listening to a rotc marching band to commemorate…what, exactly?
