O.K. I doubt this congressman will get anywhere with his proposal of eliminating mortgage tax deductions on any home over 3,000 sq ft for environmental reasons. It is interesting to see that it has become a new target and I think the environment, global warming and energy consumption will become a bigger political issue in the coming years especially if the political power shifts. It seemed odd that the author didn’t think it was a bad idea, just bad timing.

Food for thought but I wonder if next year the builders will come out with 2,998 sq ft homes.

Not to get off topic SD but I will, Adrian picked the right time of year, however until baseball gets a salary cap I can’t get all the way into it, the yanks 195 mil payroll and seven teams over 100 to the padres 58 mil, it feels as much like a sport as deer hunting does, it’s just not fair.

Do fear the Pats, they were busy in the off season and got what they were missing, it’s still pre-season but they are the team to beat. My favorite author, Bill Simmons at espn’s page 2 hasn’t even gloated yet about his beloved pats so let’s wait and see if anyone can stop L.T. before we lose any sleep.

Back to the topic, I think that energy efficiency will become more popular with policy makers and consumers, energy costs will not go down and as a buyer they do play a role in the back of my head when shopping for houses. I can afford a larger home but I keep looking at things under 2400 sq ft and sometimes much less just because I know they are more efficient and have lower carrying costs. I also tend to like some of the energy efficient features of newer construction (tankless water heaters, vinlyl windows, finished and insulated garages) I find irony in people that live in 3500 sq ft homes with a 1/4 acre of landscaping and drive hybrid cars. It’s like the big mac and diet coke irony. For me it’s not about being green it’s about selective frugality.

Seems that his boss couldn’t get enough materials to sell, and the prices that the solar panels cost were brutal (they are hard to get a hold of). As they couldn’t do high volume, their cost to install was so crazy that it would take many, many years to get back the cost.

We need an immediate high-production solar panel industry, we need to set the price and put huge rebates on it. Most other countries aren’t afraid to pump money into new technologies, sad thing is that we usually invent them, but can’t get our entrenched business cartels to go for it.

p.s. The Maglev train was invented here. Our gov’t gave 50K to MIT et. al. to sponsor some research. The Germans, French, and Japanese actually created the trains… Probably have less Republican’s running around those places…. Greedy, evil Republican’s… (Just kidding – you know which Republican’s are causing the problems…)

The amount of energy that could be produced is amazing if everyone had panels. You said it correct Cyphire, if the feds or state county gave big dollars to existing homeowners and builders to implement measures like this the payoffs in the future would truly be substantial. Similarly it would give birth to rampant growth in those particular industries and technologies. Seems pretty much win win to me…

Hey we got one of the best names in baseball this year, Milton Bradley (only second to Coco Crisp) so we are SERIOUS PLAYERS right?

Solar is about to blow up and not to save the world but because the world’s energy market is double what the world’s agricultural market is, follow the money baby. I won’t bore you with the details but there are companies in various countries making advancements so that panels can be cheap, many times more efficient, last longer and need very little sunlight. Some of the technology doesn’t require traditional panels, is clear and can be sprayed onto anything or integrated into things like windows. Once it gets past the cost/benefit threshold it will become mainstream rather than a novelty. What you read was likely about the thin film (like window tint film) which is pretty promising and dirt cheap to produce or the MEG (multiple exiticon generation), simply put, more energy from less sun, you don’t even need sun, just UV. I think the next genration of solar due out in a few years will be cheap enough that rebates won’t be needed for it to make fiscal sense to people. The rough estimates for residential of the new tech is just a few thousand dollars and a 50 year lifespan, with a break even point of a year or two, if that does come to market it will be immensly popular.
