The semi-finished basement of my 100 year old house is full of what looks to me to be old growth redwood in excellent condition. 6×6 support pillars, ceiling beams, and a small wall panel area.
Most of it appears to have never been painted or treated. It has puffed out slightly and turned a dark red-brown color.
Should I just let it be? Maybe sand it a bit and give it a clear finish?
There is a single pillar that has one side with white paint that looks decades old and is 40% gone. Best way to remove this while keeping myself safe from possible lead and also not damaging what may be irreplaceable lumber?
Finally, there are a few random nails sticking out of some of the pillars and ceiling beams. Better to leave them be even though they are a little unsightly, or remove and patch them?
