The Jewish were the merchant class. They benefited from being in the right professions at at the right time in history. When Europe experienced the industrial revolution, the new middle-class embraced commerce and the sciences.
The Christian aristocrats clung onto the old order. In fact, aristocrats believed that it was beneath them to be doctors and merchants.
