Yeah, sorry. That was pretty much a non-starter in Catholic school, too.
July 6, 2014 at 11:23 AM #776104scaredyclassicParticipantI guess what I believe is a variation on the golden rule posited by John Rawls called the veil of ignorance, which involves doing unto others as you’d wish to be treated without knowing who or where you’d be in society before deciding on a rule or course of action.
While this might sometimes appear unprincipled or like moral relativism it is actually really just dealing with others in a fair way …
If you know your exact interests before deciding on a rule your position will necessarily be only to your own advantage ptobably
July 6, 2014 at 11:32 AM #776105scaredyclassicParticipantSo for instance in deciding a gay rights issue you would set forth a rule not knowing whether you will be an evangelical Christian or a frisky gay fellow in frisco. Your place in society is variable so you take others needs and desires more seriously.
It involves imagining ones self in another’s shoes and acting accordingly to accommodate how u might feel..
We legislate behind the veil of ignorance.
This philosopher kind of spoke to me in college.

I was more a fan of Lou Rawls.

Both were very very smooth.

I was too young for most of it, but I really miss the 1970s.
July 6, 2014 at 12:08 PM #776109scaredyclassicParticipantMe too but it’s more the plaintive confused wailing of Neil Young that speaks to me of past glory.
Perhaps the best times are when our muscle mass is highest and our erections firmest.
By these standards these are the best years of my life.

Not really.
July 6, 2014 at 9:54 PM #776125scaredyclassicParticipantI would like to see hobby lobby execs counseled vigorously streetside before going in to dr. Offices for prostate exams.
Sometimes these procedures result in involuntary erections and according to some religions are tantamount to the abomination that is pederasty.
I think they need to be advised on these matters in the street by screaming counselors within spitting distance.
July 6, 2014 at 9:55 PM #776127scaredyclassicParticipantAlso if they have cancer miracle snake handlers should block the entrance to the clinic and urge them to live by faith alone

I don’t agree with all the idiots screaming at women in front of abortion clinics, but this isn’t a very good comparison. I doubt there are very many people who would argue that you are killing an unborn child with a prostate exam.
July 6, 2014 at 10:47 PM #776132paramountParticipantscaredy you seem to have a particular intolerance to those who seek to express their religious beliefs.
You don’t know if there is a god or not.

look if they were sincere, it wouldnt be right to make fun of them. but if they sincerely believe int he sacredness of life, after they’re done protesting all the needless deaths in our pointless economicwars, after they’re done campaigning against the death penalty and sitting vigils to prevent executions, , if they still want to get involved in women’s healthcare, I’d say, you know what, those are some sincere religious dudes. more power to them. i respect them and their firmly held beliefs
but no..
it’s not their religious expression im intolerant of. I would welcome that. it would be beautiful…. it’s that they’re full of crap…
i am willing to stake my eternal soul that our creator is not on the side of hobby lobby.
