ParticipantI’d be interested in any details of hospitals and dentists in Tijuana, because my views are identical to yours. I am simply not prepared to pay into the US system. I’ve been using the hospitals and dentist in Taiwan recently, and the system, (which is apparently based on Medicare), is very impressive and of course is relatively cheap. Taiwan is a long way from CA, and when I return to the US later this year, I was going to look into Mexico. Catastrophic insurance for $160 doesn’t sound too expensive. Any idea what it would be for a couple? Who is the carrier? They should really call it personal bankruptcy insurance. The only connection to health, is the damage done as a result of all the stress the current system causes.

My carrier is Assurant. I have absolutely no opinion of them whatsoever. They gave me the most inexpensive rate with a 3-year lock that I came across when I was looking. I’ve never heard from them nor vice versa (I’m on monthly auto-pay). I don’t know how much it would be for a couple.
Frankly, the next step in this for me is just to get a similar policy through a Mexican carrier, perhaps with a travel rider, as I’m sure it would be even cheaper. The only reason I would ever set foot in a US health establishment would be for a dire, time-sensitive emergency where I couldn’t get myself down to TJ. And at the end of the day, I could just stroke a check if something like that arose – although I wouldn’t enjoy doing so.

ParticipantI think doctors, dentists, and veterinarians are just out of touch with what an average persons income is and what they can afford. I’m perfectly healthy and so is my family (thank goodness) and we do have insurance through work but my poor dog has no insurance what do we do for her? I think if doctors(all doctors) were made to quote prices in advance then the lower priced doctors would get more business and prices would start dropping. Rather than use the entire US population in a huge experiment why don’t we implement health reform for veterinarians and see how that works first.
