No, I still think that petty power and pride caused all this.
Petty power on the part of the cop. And petty power on the part of the Chief who though that he could control things.
The release of the video of the theft just escalated things and clearly shows the petty power of the Chief.

You are still blaming the police for these actions….don’t think much of the potential of common man do you?
August 19, 2014 at 2:09 PM #777483PCinSDGuestThe riots and looting started after the thug criminal came out saying his thug criminal buddy had been shot in the back for no reason. Because, he wouldn’t lie about something like that would he?
The release of the video occurred later.

The person who kills needs to explain himself.
What is the “potential of the common man”? Cops are not common people. They are trained to be professional, deliberate and thoughtful.
Here’s a very good article by a cop. It discusses body cameras and the use of other means such a persuasion to diffuse situations.
I agree with the author that provoking police officers can result in tragedy.
But still, unless the cop’s life in danger, he must retreat from deadly force, because you can never take back a killing.Wilson’s grabbing at Brown from inside his police car was neither professional nor smart.

I said the release of the video escalated tensions. What was objective of the release, but the show the petty power of the chief?
August 19, 2014 at 2:34 PM #777486PCinSDGuestCorrelation does not equal causation. They were already rioting and looting. Prove that releasing the video caused anything, other than to give those rioters and looters a bogus reason for doing so. And, it has been widely reported that the rioting and looting has only been done by a few outsiders looking to stir up trouble, rather than any of the fine citizens of Ferguson.
I don’t know if releasing the video was right or wrong. But it does show that this gentle young teenager, on his way to college, had a much darker side.
He had just committed strong armed robbery and was on his way to another store. First time? Seems unlikely. It definitely shows he has a propensity for violence and lawlessness. That will be relevant.
But, no way do I think showing that video caused anything. For example, just a short time ago, the police just a few miles from Ferguson shot and killed another young black man. He just robbed a store and was armed with a knife and came at the police. There’s already a crowd of 150 protesting the shooting.

I know, you would argue the police could have easily got in their cars and drove away.
August 19, 2014 at 2:45 PM #777487FlyerInHiGuestOk, say the release of the video didn’t cause any more anger and resentment among the protesters.
What was the point of the Chief of Police to release the video? Brown is dead already and not on trial.
It clearly shows that the Chief is a proud man, not really interested in diffusing the situation. He’s just digging in.
Yes, maybe it’s easy for me to criticize comfortably sitting here. But I’m not in leadership and charged with preserving my institution.
August 19, 2014 at 8:04 PM #777489NotCrankyParticipantWould Gandhi say, o.k. let’s go ahead and loot and riot and do damage to our towns , after nitpicking British protocol in a case like this ? Would King in the civil rights movement? That’s just screwed up that’s all it is. That moral compass is definitely broken.
August 19, 2014 at 9:13 PM #777490svelteParticipant
My take on this is that
1. We don’t know if Brown attacked or tried to attack the officer.
2. We know the cop took 6 shots, but don’t know under what circumstance they were taken.
3. I think there is a certain element of prejudice going by those who defend both Brown and those that defend Wilson, when we don’t yet have a clear picture of what happened.
4. Regardless, it seems like some folks are finding an excuse to riot and loot, which is unfortunate, because it detracts from the real issue at hand…
+1
Impossible for any of us to take a well informed position on this. An unfortunate incident for sure no matter what the exact story.

+2 flu.
A very astute summation.
August 19, 2014 at 9:54 PM #777492moneymakerParticipantI only have 2 questions. Who was Michael Johnson? Like really who was he in character? Was he shot in the back? It is unique in that if he was shot in the back the police have no leg to stand on. Almost always they can say someone was in possession of a deadly weapon, but I don’t think so in this case.
August 19, 2014 at 10:31 PM #777494FlyerInHiGuestIt’s not as simple as saying “I don’t know, so I don’t have an opinion.”
One guy is dead and the shooter is still living. Of course, the onus is on the shooter cop to come out and explain himself.
The police department has not explained the shooting. They released a video but didn’t explain under what circumstances the shooting occurred.
Is there fingerprint and DNA evidence on/in the car? Where is the car?
The police really needs to be proactive and let the public know exactly how they are investigating the killing. No communications sounds like a cover-up.
What are they testing for? Who did they interview?
This is not a run of the mill investigation where they can afford to say “we’ll release the results of the investigation when we release them.”
BTW, when my car was broken in, my neighbor reported it when he saw receipts that belonged to me scattered on the ground nearby. Cop came out and interviewed me. He turned in the report that night and I received a letter 2 days later telling me that I could call for the report. He took DNA samples where the thief opened the coin box. He honestly told me that the lab would not test because it was a small crime. The exception would be if it was related to a string of other crimes.
August 20, 2014 at 2:26 AM #777495CA renterParticipantBrian, you clearly don’t understand the kind of stress a cop has to deal with in a situation like this. This “kid” was no innocent waif. He already showed a propensity to commit crimes and do whatever he wanted, irrespective of the law or what a police officer was instructing him to do. He willfully got into a physical altercation with a cop…and the “kid” is HUGE and violent. The cop does NOT know whether or not a suspect is armed in a situation like this. There is the possibility that he had the right to use deadly force.
We need to find out what happens in the investigation so that we can (hopefully) get a full and complete understanding of what happened.
And as much as you’re likely to say that the cops will have each other’s backs, the thugs will do so as well. And many thugs will intimidate witnesses who attempt to give their perspective if it can be used against the thugs.

August 20, 2014 at 6:06 AM #777497CoronitaParticipantWhat I am curious though is would this “outrage” have been any different if, instead of being a white man,
the cop was
1. a woman
or
2. african american
or
3. hispanic
or
4. asianI think it’s stretching for some to be concluding that that Wilson is a racist, and yet Holder seems to be hell bent on bring up civil rights violation.
That I find very disturbing, again imho the entire double standard thing… -
