ParticipantCompared to syria, an occasional beat down in a semi police state looks pretty good. From the sound of the article she started the incident with a,slightly irritating question to the officer and could’ve avoided the incident if she had just kept her eyes straight ahead and not talked to the cop in the first place about a car alarm in the area. Moral. Never ever ever engage or question a cop unless absolutely necessary and then only with extreme levels of deference. That’s the best course of action..

Participant^^^
Blaming the victim much? If that roid-addled asshat can’t handle a slightly irritating question (as all public-facing employees get), he should be breaking rocks in prison for a while.
I refuse to show special deference to cops, and talk to them exactly like to your average shop employee. Polite, but not obsequious — no “sir” or “ma’am.” I’m not a serf and cops are not nobles, last I checked. Serfdom for my people ended in 1861 or so (Russian empire) 🙂

ParticipantScaredy is makIng a point about the reality of our entitled blue brotherhood. Most cops are good people, a few are bad apples. Come across a bad one and don’t genuflect and you can easily end up not just beaten down, facing multiple charges, jail time and if they’re just in a bad mood, dead. Unless someone happens to have video of the whole event.
That’s wron, but pretty much the reality of the situation at the moment.

ParticipantAs with most videos, this video starts after the confrontation has already begun and we can’t see what precipitated it.
But based on all the squirming and fighting back she was doing on the ground it’s clear she’s not cooperating. Surest way to get your ass beat by the cops is to fight back when they are trying to arrest you.
If the cops are trying to cuff you you just need to comply. If they did something wrong in arresting you in the first place then let the legal system sort it out.

ParticipantI have seen dozens of incidents like these. They are all over the internet. Cops are being made to look very bad. This is very clearly justified is some instances. Other times you’re left wondering what’s been left out of the story. Whoever is to blame, it is all ugly but I guess has always been there. Its just much more visible with cameras and the internet everywhere.

I’ll just refer everyone back to the Kelly Thomas beating video and ask if anyone other than the 12 idiots on the jury think any amount of compliance was going to save him from receiving a beat down?
Because to me it’s real obvious that Ramos was spoiling to beat him from the initial contact.

Or militarize them and subject them to something similar to the UCMJ, where offenses are treated more severely. If they give a few germs like the one on the video ten years’ hard labor for doing something like that, then maybe the rest would be more circumspect.

It’s a natural human instinct to squirm and fight when some piece of shit thug is punching you in the face. Do not try to excuse this shithead’s actions. Hope the city loses big, he gets fired, and he gets charged in a Federal civil rights (doesn’t have to involve race as law is written) rap as well.
Bet he beats his wife and daughter, too.

[Emphasis mine]
Nobody is making cops look bad, we are just now seeing what they’ve looked like all along.
The “few bad apples” argument is complete nonsense. If the majority were good, they would make the effort to remedy the bad ones. They are all routinely complicit in violent crime, which is absurd since we actually pay them to stop crime.
The bad ones need to start doing time for the violent crimes they commit. Punch or kick a person already in handcuffs and you do a year behind bars.
We also need legislation that makes it a crime to be complicit. The cops who look the other way or lie on reports to protect their buddies need to see a little cell time also.
The problem is easily fixed. Good news is that public awareness and perception is moving in the right direction.
October 8, 2015 at 9:45 AM #790060spdrun
ParticipantThere is already legislation. Problem is that it’s unevenly applied, if at all. Assault, criminal mayhem, complicity in a crime.
DA’s need to apply the law.

I’ll treat them politely, just like everyone else. I will not bend over and suck their cocks just because there’s a small chance one of them might be a thug. By that argument, I’d have to call everyone “sir” and treat them like a peasant treats a lord because they might be a psycho killer or mugger.
And if they ask me to suck, I’ll bite hard, even though pigskin isn’t kosher.

ParticipantI am remembering when that cop or ex-cop decided he was going to fight back so the cops went out and shot two mexican ladies. I think he got in trouble initially because one of his partners roughed up a disabled homeless man because he was hanging out too close to a Marriott or some other higher end hotel. He wanted that cops behavior scrutinized. His eval’s went down and he got marginalized. I mean that was one way to put the story together from what I saw. In some ways he was a fighter for the kind of justice some here would like to see. And we know how that went.

She only got punched in the face after the second officer showed up and she increased her attempts to get free.
I’d like to see some of you do the job of police work day in and day out of the comfort of your desk chair.
